It's fine. Every eco-system has cycles of growth and decline. when a population outgrows its resources it inevitably recedes - often in a catastrophic way - to a small level from which it eventually starts to grow again. The problem is in a developed ecosystem with a lot of inter-relation that effect often takes things backwards. In an intellectual society even more so. The dark ages following roman decline for example. It took 1500-1700 years for some of their every day inventions to be rediscovered. (concrete, underfloor heating, to name two)
