No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.

Well if we assume the atmosphere of space would be made up of composition of elements as space already contains, and in the same concentrations. It should be odourless, as Hydrogen and Helium are by far the most common elements and they are odourless themselves. /bore
For there to be an atmosphere (Greek for vapour sphere), there must be a body massive enough for the gravity to hang on to a bit of gas. But, then this body would be structurally significant enough that it would be considered an astronomical object, and not in space.
By definition, space and atmosphere are mutually exclusive.
Therefore, it's impossible to 'smell' space because it can't have an atmosphere.
Unless of course we're taking about an artificial atmosphere, e.g. in a space vehicle.
So the question really is, what did the astronaut have for dinner?
The smell of a library?
