    Leasing = Rental?

I don't want to get into a contract but I want to drive something a bit nicer. There's a chance I'm not going to be in the country in a year so I don't mind paying a premium for no ties.

But, I never hear people talk about this option. Does anyone have an insight?

I saw BMW/Mini had similar wording.

Just remember that gap insuance is essential. The lease company does not have to accept the insurer's valuation on write off, leaving you with a potential cost.

Also watch out for own fault issues near contract termination. If it takes you longer to fix than the lease, expect to be liable for costs.

    Re: Leasing = Rental?

Leasing != rental. Leasing you are entering into a contract that may limit you to the number of miles you can drive. A year may also be a bit short for a leasing contract.

Rental you just take the car when you need it. Which is better depends on your mileage and type of driving. If you live in a town with good public transport, it might work out cheaper to use that and then rent a car for longer journeys or when you really need a car. You might enter into a contractual type agreement with a rental company that gives you preferential rates or a service agreement.

If you're going to have short notice on leaving the country then any contract is a pain in the rump.....but here's an idea.

If you truly ARE gonna leave the UK in 12 months... You could choose a nice car with a mate.....get a bank.loan each....half and half....then buy it....

You use it for one year....and then give it to him to keep.

You get the first year....while it's newish.....then he gets it forever after that.

This is what I've done since as soon as I was able to rent a car (1 year after passing test, iirc). First year of driving I bought a cheap second hand car to tide me over, thereafter it's been public transport plus rentals as required.

That said, I'm not fussy about what I drive as I only hire a car when I actually need one. It sounds like you might want something nice to drive, at which point you're probably looking at the £50 - £100 a day categories (intermediate, small premium, large premium), and if you need to use a car regularly it certainly isn't going to be the cheap option.

As an alternative to Zak's suggestion, you could always take out a small loan to buy something old but nice then just flog it again if/when you leave the country? Could end up being a lower overall cost, and it'd potentially give you a small lump sum coming in just as you're leaving, which might be useful...!

Or do you live somewhere with a city car scheme? Zip-car or similar might be a good alternative to ad-hoc rental.

They have a habbit of being unbookable during certain peak times, which is often when you want them.

There are a handful of 12 month lease deals here but not many: http://www.contracthireandleasing.com/

    Re: Leasing = Rental?

It has its uses. Depends entirely on personal circumstances and what the car is for and the exact situation.

Also if you're not fixed on having a specific model or specification it can be good, as some of the leasing deals that come through are very good.
