    'Emotional' AI

Ok this isn't new news nor is it GD exactly, but reading this yesterday, first thought - this is one of those times when the prospect of technology going right is as bad as it going wrong.

Can't think of much I'd like less than some chunk of tech saying "Ooh, you've got a face like a cracked screen this morning, I sense something is amiss."

have enough trouble with people who think they know what I'm thinking, thank you very much..

Hah, now that you mention it, depressed hypochondriac AI would be ok by me. Bit of black humour, bit of sarcasm, now you're talking.

My first thought was those doors, was it on the Heart of Gold? The ones that said "Glad to be of service" every time they opened for you. I don't need doors to give a contented sigh of a job well done as they close

    Re: 'Emotional' AI

I hope we have the proper moral safeguards in place at the point we can develop actual thinking machines who do have some degree of emotion. Do we treat them as simple machines like a toaster or treat them like humans or even to the level of pets, with the relevant rights??

It might seem a bit far fetched now,but it is a debate we really need to have before we get to that point.

Personally I think if were were to develop truely thinking machines with emotions it would be cruel to not give them rights,as otherwise it would like creating an intelligent slave race with a bunch of emotions.

I think the idea was well explored by the likes of Asimov in various of his books (The Bicentennial Man is a good example), but I don't think people will be ready to accept machines on a level with humans for some time.

Treat them like a toaster, you mean a lump hammer and garbage disposal? (Red Dwarf talkie toaster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRq_SAuQDec)

The first thing they will do is castigate our use of the term "artificial" intelligence as being discriminatory

p.s. I finally got to use that icon... woot
If Wisdom is the coordination of "knowledge and experience" and its deliberate use to improve well being then how come "Ignorance is bliss"

I just feel before we play god we need to have the debate and the toaster and it's obsession with bread products!

While I can see the purpose of a machine being able to display (emulate) artificial emotions, and just don't see the benefit of machines having "real emotions", especially the negative ones (though I understand it would be quite a scientific achivement). I want cheerful machine slaves that I can treat like toasters. Not machines that will feel betrayed if I decide it is time for a new one and decide that it's not them that needs to be replaced but me. I do agree that it would be wrong to have sentient machines without right, but that is another reason why I am not keen on the idea of sentient machines.
