Have you heard of rotary encoder?

I am working in military navy and my friend asked me a favor to look for online rotary encoders. He is a boat mechanic and in charge with the parts of ships including radars. Honestly, I am not familiar with the details of rotary encoders and what is all about. But if you know any online suppliers that sell this equipment, please let me know as he needs replacement ASAP. TY

Re: Have you heard of rotary encoder?

I have heard of a rotary encoder, but I am a bit perplexed as to the context of your question, because rotary encoders are usually quite mundane and is a common piece of electronic equipment, you might have one under your right (or left) hand right now.

The term rotary encoder may refer to something as simple as the wheel on your computer mouse, or the mechanism to provide servo motor feedback in a UAV.

So is your friend repairing a Logitech MX518 or a General Atomics MQ1 Predator?

Re: Have you heard of rotary encoder?

Rotary encoders are used in so many different products, your gonna need to know the make and model of the equipment he's after an encoder for. Otherwise trying to buy the right one is gonna be near impossible.
That being said, these are worth a try. If indeed it's marine electronics products that he's actually after???

Re: Have you heard of rotary encoder?

As DDY said, they are many and varied, but generally used to either determine the angular position of a shaft with respect to a fixed point, or the direction and relative change in position. Although the output can be analogue (such as a synchro system, which were widely used in servo systems and analogue computing for gunnery systems) generally the output is some form of digital code - but the coding varies from application to application.

Re: Have you heard of rotary encoder?

We use hex numbered rotary encoders on the hardware panels we sell (Broadcast control systems)...

We also use them for value control of devices, such as gain.

As above, we need more clarification to help understand the requirements

Re: Have you heard of rotary encoder?

Thank you for sharing your ideas. My friend is in-charged in maintaining and fixing battle ships like Barak, and Halul with radars. Today, I came back to him to ask the model and other details, unfortunately he was not able to give me the answers. He showed me a sticker named "Dynapar". I am not sure if this is a company or brand name. So, I searched it online and attached it with a link. Is the link has something to do with ships? It would be great to hear your opinion and tomorrow I am gonna show it to my friend to compare and find the right model. TIA

Re: Have you heard of rotary encoder?

Sounds like your friend wants a word with the chap in charge of Ship's Stores, or the Chief Engineer or someone like that.... Military hardware - it's going to be little more specialised than the sort of kit most of us on a UK based computer forum are going to be playing with on a regular basis.....

    What's your technical background?

Because considering the application and the technical knowledge you have displayed, I think you're biting off far more than you can chew.

If your friend, who's in charge of maintaining military equipment, is unable to identify and source a replacement rotary encoder; perhaps it's time to bring in an engineering consultant?

Re: Have you heard of rotary encoder?

If this is military equipment, he should probably go through his normal support channels.

Dynapar are manufacturers of rotary encoders, so if he can identify a part number, he may be able to obtain a replacement from them or one of their distributors.

I doubt that HEXUS members will be able to help you further. The application you are asking about is quite specialised.
