Aside from the sense of joy / disappointment, how is this outcome going to affect you in the near future? Did you win big betting on the Brexit? Reconsider the summer travel plan until the market/pound restabilises? Place an order on an VR headset right away before any price changes? Have an European partner who might be affected in the near future if freedom of movement is indeed axed?

On my end I have suffered no immediate financial loss since I have spent the last couple of years overseas, and took almost everything with me. In the mid-term, it might make my plan to look for seasonal work in Europe much more difficult (again, depending on what happens with free movements).

Re: Britain is doomed!! (How is that going to affect you)

Financially (My hedge on exit not nearly enough to compensate.)
    Job wise
    Family wise

Don't think Britain is doomed, most will just have to settle for a lower standard of living and putting up with a bit more inequality.

I'll see if I can OC my computer a bit more instead of buying new stuff

And longer term I'll probably move at least to Scotland, presuming they will go independent. Switzerland and Japan are other possibles.

Well we are not out yet...but would assume with careful negotiating we would sorta still be in but have the benefits that we sought e.g more sovereignty but might have to agree still to free travel of EU citizens to the UK.

Lol,I meant that as a joke! I will wait and see what the actual outcome is over the next year or so first before I make any longer term decisions.

Feel for you kalniel - know quite a few probably in your position too.

    Edit!!

On the flip side will we be buying more amd stuff now?

+£707 on Betfair. I would be +£2,400 if I hadn't mistakenly thought that Remain could gain on Leave. Ah well. It should also have been obvious (in hindsight..) that Leave odds would get a lot lower at some point during the overnight count, so Leave at 10-1 yesterday would have been stonking value.

Good time to buy banking & construction shares.

Things Can Only Get Better (after getting worse in the short term)

It's entirely possible that the EU could fundamentally change over the next few weeks & months. Just because there was a Brexit vote doesn't necessarily mean that there will actually be a brexit - whoever's the next PM could say that the terms have changed & we need another referendum.

My job is reasonably safe. I work for a company that has a global presence, i.e. they have no need to close up shop in the UK.

We have plenty of friends that aren't so lucky. Most of the major manufacturing operations in Oxfordshire are major exporters to Europe, whose jobs *are* movable to European mainland factories. Lotta friends are gonna be out of jobs in a few years.

    Gibraltar
    Leave 4.1%
    823 VOTES
    Remain 95.9%
    19,322 VOTES

Well Gibraltarians are genuinely scared. Aside from the nonsense that will likely occur at the border with Spain (hours and hours of queues anyone?), there's a lot of concern about how trade and other costs will be affected by the leave vote. The biggest fear, though, is that Gibraltar will be used as a chip at the negotiation table for any desire to interact with the EU.

Might not too bad - become some sort of free trade zone or special economic area night help Gibraltar.

Well, it might shake up the EU for the rest of the members given the large number that will now want their own referendum, but I can't help feeling we will get absolutely screwed over any negotiations, even if it hurts themselves, so they can set an example for anyone else thinking of leaving.

Gibraltar might be able to dissolve it's association with the UK and remain in the EU. Not ideal, especially with Spain eager to get her hands on it.

I wouldn't say that my job is doomed, but the risk has just risen by a huge amount.

I'm certainly a hell of a lot less comfortable than I was yesterday.

Re: Britain is doomed!! (How is that going to affect you)

I think the fear is that the following happens:

UK: We'd like to access the single market please.
EU: Okay, but freedom of movement required.
    UK: Okay.
Spain: Oh, and bilateral talks on Gibraltar. They don't get a say in what happens to them.
UK: Hmmm, okay. [Prepares sacrificial lamb].

Gibraltar has, in the past, voted overwhelmingly to remain British and reject any notion of Spanish rule or direct influence. I mean a turn out at the polls of over 90% with an almost 100% vote to remain British.

The feeling is the Gibraltar can't survive as fully independent. If that's the case, then it's going to have to look to ever stronger ties for Britain, and possibly find a way to make itself of greater use to Britain as a piece of Britain 'in' Europe.

On the other hand, if Spain can't effectively use Gibraltar as a bargaining token, then if Britain chooses to access the single market at the price of free movement, my guess is that things for Gibraltar, in terms of the border, will remain the same as they are now.

    EDIT:

    That didn't take long:

June 24th - "Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo told Spanish radio:
"Our formula... is British-Spanish co-sovereignty for a determined period of time, which after that time has elapsed, will head towards the restitution of Gibraltar to Spanish sovereignty..."

"It is now a bilateral issue that will be negotiated exclusively between the United Kingdom and Spain," he added, saying a solution would have to be found if Gibraltar wanted to keep its access to the EU's single market.

In a tweet, Gibraltar's Chief Minister Fabian Picardo called for calm.
"We have surpassed greater challenges. It is time for unity, for calm & for rational thinking. Together & united we will continue to prosper," he said."

    EDIT 2:

    Nor the response:

"David Lidington, the Minister for Europe, issued a short statement in which he left no doubt that the British Government would continue to stand by the people of Gibraltar.
“I want to be absolutely clear,” he said.
“The United Kingdom will continue to stand beside Gibraltar.”
“We will never enter into arrangements under which the people of Gibraltar would pass under the sovereignty of another State against your wishes.”
“Furthermore, the UK will not enter into a process of sovereignty negotiations with which Gibraltar is not content.”
“The people of Gibraltar voted in huge numbers for the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union,” he said.
“I know many will be frustrated their view was not reflected in the United Kingdom. I know many will be concerned about the future.”
“It will take some time for our future relationship with the EU to become clear.”
“As I said to the Chief Minister earlier today, the UK Government will work in partnership with Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar as we move forward.”
He added: “The people of Gibraltar have built their remarkable success story through hard work, ingenuity, resilience and adaptability.”
“I know Gibraltar and Gibraltarians will rise to the challenge again, and make British Gibraltar stronger still.”"

That's a given, I think, although there's plenty of ways to spin it so it doesn't sound so bad in the rest of Europe - it was a close result, the UK has never really engaged fully with Europe anyway (just look at our list of opt outs), and hey, importing things from the UK just became a lot cheaper due to the falling pound!

For me personally, it's unlikely to make a huge amount of difference. For my workplace it's going to be very uncertain, as a fair chunk of the jobs here are directly funded by the EU. For my family, in the short term at least, we'll probably be slightly better off, as some of our household income is earned in other currencies, and obviously that's worth more to use at the minute thanks to the pound tanking last night.

For the rest of the country, it's going to take a while for the dust to settle and lines to be drawn. There's a lot concerns (will Parliament respect the referendum result anyway? What will the timescales be for EU withdrawal if they do? Who will be the next Prime Minister? Will there be a parliamentary vote/process or will they just trigger Article 50 directly), none of which we have any power over whatsoever. But don't worry, because we're taking back Britain. *sigh*

Re: Britain is doomed!! (How is that going to affect you)

    Trump....

    On the one hand:

    Donald J. Trump ‏@realDonaldTrump 32m32 minutes ago
Just arrived in Scotland. Place is going wild over the vote. They took their country back, just like we will take America back. No games!

On the other hand he might win some votes with this sort of a stance:

"Statement Regarding British Referendum on E.U. Membership
The people of the United Kingdom have exercised the sacred right of all free peoples. They have declared their independence from the European Union, and have voted to reassert control over their own politics, borders and economy. A Trump Administration pledges to strengthen our ties with a free and independent Britain, deepening our bonds in commerce, culture and mutual defense. The whole world is more peaceful and stable when our two countries – and our two peoples – are united together, as they will be under a Trump Administration.
Come November, the American people will have the chance to re-declare their independence. Americans will have a chance to vote for trade, immigration and foreign policies that put our citizens first. They will have the chance to reject today’s rule by the global elite, and to embrace real change that delivers a government of, by and for the people. I hope America is watching, it will soon be time to believe in America again."

One would imagine that Hilary will play the opposite hand and look at how awful things look for the UK and how Trump has an old, and incorrect vision.

This referendum and the effect it has on the EU could well affect the next US election...

Personally I do not expect any significant changes in the next 4 years.

What I do wonder is what hoops I will have to jump through in order to stay in the UK in the long run. After 20+ years of living here I don't feel like moving back to Germany, it's full of Germans you know.
