I was sitting on the balcony having a smoke faffing around with my phone since my mobile data stopped working.
Heard someone say "darbe" which means coup. Switched on the TV annnnnd..... I found the reason why my data wasn't working
No one has taken over anything yet, phoned a few people in Istanbul everything is just gridlocked, my cousins live near a military airport in konya they said a few jets were scrambled, guess we just have to wait and see what happens.
Exciting times ....
Oh and there is a social media block
Military has said it is in control. Curfuw declared.
Russians advising its citizens to stay in doors. Russian aggression seen as a reason for the coup.
Will.wait and see.
Let's hope its peaceful; hang in there Shakerist.
Perhaps a coup against Erdogan? History implies the Turkish armed forces could be moving against the anti-democratic/Islamist measures carried out by Erdogan's government.
Yes, the Internet is being heavily restricted there. To be honest, I'm wondering if the Americans had any warning of this action and turned a blind eye.
Edit:
Newsnight are covering it now as well as other news channels.
If the situation gets out of control, a civil war in Turkey would be cataclysmic for the region and Europe.
Edit2:
If it's a coup by the secular military against Erdogan and if the military really have the momentum then it could be over in a matter of hours. Apparently he's stuck in a hotel room somewhere, talking on facetime to a Turkish news channel...!

Civilians on streets, watching a group of civilians board a tank
Edit : live on a news channel, I'm not in Ankara or istanbul
..and Blair and Cameron were supporting Turkey in joining the EU...h'mm maybe they were cleverer than we thought in that if Turkey was in the EU it might be more stable.
2nd computer gigabyte P965ds3p, 7770 E2140@2.9ghz, corsair HX520 6 years stable, replaced now with E8400@3.9ghz and will overclock more when I'm bored.
Sit tight shakerist! Stay inside away from crowds etc is being advised by numerous Foreign Offices around the world.
Edit:
Quite a few conflicting reports, the Mirror says Erdogan has already fled the country a in private jet? Sky News is reporting gunfire in Istanbul now.

An announcement by the military is that turkey has strayed too far from its roots of Kemalism , and far too much into islam and should return to Kemalism and be a secular western looking and tolerant society
That's the ideal outcome.
BBC news are reporting some of the military are remaining loyal to Erdogan.. Hopefully the majority of military are opposed to him and quickly prevail.
Edit:
Reports of Tanks opening fire near the parliament building and the Turkish Intelligence HQ is on fire?

Sounds like they are fed up of Erdogan (not surprised) and want to fix the country. But these things always start with good intentions....
Hmm, watching the various news channels it's looking as if this coup might fail. The general feeling I'm getting at the moment, hard to quantify.
Edit:
I'm going to call it a night, I have hunch that Erdogan will live to fight another day. I feel sorry for the younger westernised Turks who want Erdogan gone and a more Western-style democracy in Turkey, though there's no guarantee the military can provide it in the longer run either, since they are secular but not necessarily democratic in relation to politics, supporting a democratic regime etc.
