A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

I got a call from 007971088999 (so it already looks dodgy) He said his name was something illegible.
He said he was calling about my car accident I had with some minors (or miners) I'm not sure which he meant. When I told him I hadn't had any accidents with any minors / miners in the past 3 years he believed I had a car accident.
Maybe he was going for "I believe it, therefore it happened". But he hung up when I asked him why he's calling.

So just if you ever see this number then do block it.

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

These are interesting calls, if you have time it can be quite good fun to string them along. Of course, if not they can be invited to go forth and multiply.

I managed to keep one of the "we have detected a problem with your computer" guys on the phone for 20 minutes, before he twigged. He then accused me of copulating with him, and then doing the same with my mother.

    They have never called back......

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

I haven't had a scam or marketing call for ages and I kinda miss them. I must have racked up a few hours leading call centre operators around the bend.

The last bout of scam calls asked for some random person and tried to sell me legal services as I happened to be on the phone. The last time, I asked the phone operator Richard, who totally wasn't from Delhi, if his organisation offered legal advice for the phone I had just stolen, unfortunately they don't help with criminal cases and I was promptly reported to the FBI.

Ive often pretended to be a copper, and ask what relationship the caller had with the victim... Caught that one off a US DJ show.

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

I seem to be getting a frustrating amount of those accident calls from 0207946* numbers lately (and just today from one starting 0207950), but they seem to have some speech detection system where you only get connected to a human if you actually speak, otherwise it's just a cold call.

A couple of times I've spoke to them just for a bit of fun, but I'm not sure who they were trained by as they seem to just talk constantly, talk over you when you try to reply, then hang up when they do eventually stop talking. It's actually a bit disappointing in a way!

I get the exact same calls from the exact same range of numbers - including one from the 0207950* range yesterday. I just block the numbers they appear to be using and it seems to stop them for a while. I googled them when it first started happening and it sounds like they're a bunch of ambulance chasers. I'm a little worried about stringing this lot along for fun in case my mobile number and 'accidents' somehow become associated on some insurerance company database!

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

I love the "have you had an accident that was not your fault one", just say "yes I have, this morning strangely enough" and then provide him with no information about it as he tries to sell their services saying "I really don't think I need to" etc. And when you have had enought just go :

"Look I wasn't well this morning, but it's ok I put my pants on a hot wash..." and hang up!

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

My Sony Xperia Z3 cannot block numbers - can only set a number to go straight to voicemail. Maybe IFTTT can do it - have failed googling a recipe
If they speak, I usually put my handset down until they hang up.
Have no idea why people bother to try and instruct these callers not to call again, or why they get angry - can't stop if happening - it's a little bit distracting, but I won't allow myself to even get annoyed anymore.

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

It's probably more to do with your network/provider settings. If you reject, or not answer a call, it goes to voicemail. You'd have to disable that, but that would impact everybody phoning you.

I often start with, "Yes, but it was a few years ago..." then proceed to string them along with slightly confused conversation, until they finally figure it out - I have mistaken the caller for the 'accident' involving their mum and the back seat of a car one drunken night... I thought they were phoning me for child support!!

That's if I have time, of course. Mostly I just "don't speak English"... spoken with the most perfect English diction and elocution I can manage.

Double Glazing - No, our house doesn't have any windows. No, no doors, either. Just a cardboard flap...

Mobile phone - No, I only have a landline. No, this 07- number is definitely a landline. The phone has this cable connecting it to the wall and everything...

I do enjoy the "PPE" sellers - I already have PPE. I'm on-site and wearing it right now, all Hi-Viz orange, with white hard hat, rigger boots, gloves, safety specs, winch harness, gas monitor, Turtle breathing apparatus and everything...

I mostly get automated message calls now!!

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

We had some a while back from 'Microsoft' saying we had a completely infected machine, we kept the guy on the phone passing him around the office, our thinking being that the longer we kept him talking the less damage he could do to someone else. The best was when he got passed to our CISO (chief information security officer) who said he was just calling our MS account manager for confirmation. Phone when down pretty quick at this point

I think that's pretty much what most phones do anyway - I think on mine it ends up saying something like 'the caller is on another line' when you phone.

I find it frustrating because it's not really 'professional', or indeed safe sometimes, for me to answer calls in work but I can't have my phone on silent in case of important calls - so to have these idiots phoning me is annoying to say the least.

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

I just don't answer the landline anymore and wait the voicemail to pick up. If it's legit, I pick up when they start leaving a message. I've been doing that for at least a couple of years now. Usually though they hang up when they hear the automated response of the answer machine and then I ring 1471 to see what the number is (if it hasn't been withheld) and google it to double check it.

Starting to get a bout of them again. Normally I'm near a computer and can quickly type into Google the number. If the first set of results comes up as the 'whocalledme' type websites, I don't bother answering and add it to my ever growing list of ignore numbers.

Re: A phone number to block (Nuisance call)

I enjoy scrolling through the blacklist on my phone occasionally, there are hundreds of them and I add a new one once or twice a week.

I'm almost always at a computer so I google unknown numbers before I answer (or not).

Unluckily for me I was in an accident about 4 years ago - not my fault and all claims done and dusted now. Looks like I got put on a list as I'm still being pestered to make a personal injury claim. I used to answer them and string them along, my opening line was always something like "it was only a broken arm and a bit of concussion, but I'm fine now" - gets them whipped up in to a right old lather. These days I don't have the time so I usually just answer it and leave the phone on my desk 'til they get bored, then block the number when they hang up.
