    Tomorrow I'm upgrading my PC

And I literally feel like a kid the day before Christmas. It's been a rough few years (my missus died, I quit working, moved back in with my parents), and I've not had the ability to keep my computer up to scratch. I've wanted a new GPU for ages, the 2GB VRAM on these 670s is killing me, and I've needed a new SSD for years.

    Getting a 1060 6GB and a 512GB SSD tomorrow, and I am beyond giddy.

I can't wait to be able to max out all graphics settings again.

Yeah a TV is probably my next purchase. The TV I have is 1080p but cheap as chips, the blacks are so grey it's god-awful

I'm gonna leave the CPU/mobo/RAM last, as that's the one that pisses me off the most - spending all that money for like 20% extra performance. Ergh.

Stick with what you have TBH!!

If you want some extra performance look for a secondhand Core i7 3770 or a Xeon E3 series CPU.

    Edit!!

    If that is a Core i5 2500K - I would overclock it a bit.

Re: Tomorrow I'm upgrading my PC

Yeah it's not, that's the big problem. It was a fresh build the day Sandy Bridge came out, and when I got to Scan the K was out of stock. Always peed me off because it's just leaving performance on the table.

I would leave it, was planning on leaving it another few years...but then Civ came out, and turn times are 10 seconds! So yeah I'm just gonna go for it, although I don't know if to get a 6700K (or 7700K if Kaby Lake is out by then), or a 2011-3 system.

There's always a better card, but that comes at a cost. the x60 range of Nvidia cards I always found to be the best bang-for-buck.

I get slowdown in quite a few games. Not getting 60fps at 1080p in this day and age is disgusting tbh. Bah. The thing is the x70 card is my usual upgrade path too

I assume that you are trying to play something like Witcher 3 with all the eye candy on Max ? If you tone things down slightly then you should be able to get 60fps easily with your setup. 1070+ is generally only required for the absolute max settings or for 1440p and upwards.

    I'm currently playing W3 on my GTX680 @ 1440p. I'm betting your 1060 looks a lot better !

Assuming you bought it online, you could always do the DSR thing, send it back and swap it for a 1070?

That's a bit unfortunate. Maybe you could try returning it and get a 1070? If the retailer will allow it.

If the 1060 is in good re-salable condition (packaging intact etc), it would be worth asking. Might charge you a re-stock fee as they will have to sell it as open box, but in the end you are asking to spend more money on a more expensive card.

I'd just send it back under sale of goods act (etc) and get a refund, then put that towards the 1070. Just say you purchased the wrong card or it's not what you wanted

Don't write off your card straight away. I've got two 970s and I too get slow down on some games - it's not the cards, it's the games. There is only so much brute force that can overcome bugs in game design.

There are also things you can do to improve your situation, but it requires a bit of tinkering. Get a program like MSI Afterburner (works for any manufacturer) and monitor the load on the various bits of your card whilst playing games that slow down. You might be able to see where you're maxing out. It could be your system RAM or disk I/O - which wouldn't change with a new card. If you're maxing out your GPU processor then drop some of the complex computational settings (like HBAO), if it's VRAM that's maxing out, drop your texture quality a bit.

The difference between High and Ultra is massive in performance but not so much in terms of visuals. It's usually more subtle at that point, and completely unnoticeable when you're playing games that require 60fps as you're too busy watching the action to notice whether a blade of grass accurately reflects the world.
