I would say you're being too cynical.
My company does a lot of trade shows, a few of which I attend. For the bigger ones we tend to hire a guard who sits on the booth all night to prevent any loss of equipment through theft. Even then, we tend to lock away or take with us anything that can be easily pocketed in the evenings between show days.
A lot of the hardware we have available is of little use for the common man, doesnt stop folk stealing and trying to sell for a buck or two. When the products available are things that can be used by anyone really, the problem is somewhat more significant.
And the laptop tracking function - did they bother to activate it?
