Re: UK General Election called for 8th June 2017

As much as I dislike the current government I have to agree with this. We've had a vote on Brexit, but its a real bun fight for what kind of deal or approach to a deal we want. A GE with each party proposing their position seams like a clear solution. Whether each party runs a fair or good campaign is up to them.

I don't like to get too involved with discussing politics, as it can be such a thorny issue, so thats my piece.

Is he? I honestly know nothing about him, and as someone who has voted LD in the past is kind of amazing how far into the shadows the party seems to have faded.

I also see that Cameron has said that calling an election is the right thing to do. You would think with his track record he would just keep his mouth shut

Staggering to think that there are enough places that would vote Labour even given Corbyn!

That would be the seat I'm in. Solid stockbroker belt. This lot would vote for a block of wood if it was painted blue.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

As Scary said, 2022, I believe.

It's a Fixed TERM Parliament Act, which implies term from date of previoys election, reset by a new election.

That's what I thought here, only with Red paint. (And I'm pretty sure a past incumbent or two were closely related to blocks of wood.)

    Until 2015.

That's just the way a lot of people are unfortunately. They vote based on many factors beyond logical reasoning of which candidate would actually best represent them. I suspect there are many voters who don't even know which candidate would best represent them.

I believe in the North East the colloquialism is "donkey in a red rosette", and in my old East Anglia constituency it was "pig in a blue rosette". It's not just a saying, either...

tbh the whole thing sucks for Labour. They've got a grassroots support explosion that, amongst it's various groupings, contains a significant number of young leftist europhiles, while the PLP is split between leftist eurosceptics and centrist europhiles.

Best case scenario for Labour now is probably to only wheel out Corbyn when absolutely necessary and find a leftist europhile who's good with the media to be the face of the campaign. If they can hold enough seats and the Libs make back some of their lost ground a hung parliament is still a possibility.

Most likely scenario for Labour is that they lose horribly, descend into all out civil war and the party splits (again) over Europe (again).

And now I'm going to stop making predictions in case I need to eat all my words on 9th June...

Maybe younger people will actually vote in larger numbers instead of not voting and then moaning at all the older folk who did vote.

Pretty much the only good I can see coming from this is that turnout might reach slightly more respectable levels.

No good can ever come from a political party feeling they are safely in power regardless of what they do though...

Re: UK General Election called for 8th June 2017

anyone remembered they're proposing doing boundary changes for MPs in September 2018?
    http://www.southportvisiter.co.uk/ne...wards-11878313

The number of MPs would be cut from 533 to 501 in England, from 40 to 29 in Wales, from 59 to 53 in Scotland and from 18 to 17 in Northern Ireland.

In the North West, the number of constituencies in the North West must reduce from 75 to 68
    also
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-32695546

wouldn't that also mean another general election? because you'll be having MPs representing areas that didn't vote for them, everyone will go deaf from all the moaning.

politics sure is messy at the moment.

The vote will tank amongst all age groups I suspect, as the Tories will have to try very hard to stuff this up. People don't tend to get out for forgone conclusions.

Naah, they'll announce the boundary changes but they'll only come into effect for the following election. Up until then the MPs will continue to represent the constituencies as they currently are.
