    post-dating cheques

    lo peeps

bit of an odd one this..

i sent someone a cheque for something about a week ago, on agreement that it was post-dated for the end of the month, and they'd send me the item then (cos i'm a bit broke till then). however today the money has gone out of my account! it would appear they must have paid it in on the assumption the bank wouldnt cash it until the date on it, but its been cashed today. does this mean the date on cheques is irrelivent?

Correct, the date is there just for convenience.

yup, as is the name etc it seems, I've paid a cheque in to my account by mistake before, with my dad's name on it rather than mine, and it still went in okay.

A couple of people I know have also done the same thing, and they've been paid in with no problems..

Let's be honest, the banks don't even check the signature, do they?
I once had to pay in a cheque that wasn't signed. Rather than waste time I just scrawled a sig on it myself and it went through no problem.
Hopefully if it had been for a larger amount they would have verified the sig, but I have a nagging feeling they just never bother.

I thought that they would still cash a wrongly dated cheque but that it might incurr a charge.

my bank check things like date and signatures...but then I am with a good bank. they even contact you if things look awery in your spending habits.

Please, Don't ask for that one 'as a desktop'...its really not worth wasting your time asking, unless you're able to pay £££?

All banks to that to be honest, usually to keep an eye out for fraud (ie, your cards being used at opposite ends of the country within a certain time period, abroad etc), it's just they don't usually contact you unless they suspect the activity is fraudulent.

But cheques on the other hand rely solely on whoever at the branch was processing them, and if they're doing them a 5:30 on a Friday etc I suspect that they'd be slightly less thorough than usual..

Banks aren't allowed to accept cheques with a future date on them. It's all wrong, and I suspect you could shout at them lots if you incurr charges for going overdrawn because of it.

No the date is there for a reason.

Especially with company cheques post dating can cause a problem at all the banks, as the clearing / cheque people can get a bit annoyed about cheques with the wrong dates.

Of course the date does mean a massive thing, however sometimes they are easy to slip through both ends, so i guess it was just bad luck, you can complain however.

its actually ok, they hardly do but if they found your card being used to buy used cars all of a sudden they'd put a block on it and contact you asap. some muppet tried this with my one of my parent's cards...keep an eye on your cards at restaurants and burn your old receipts is all I can say

Yup, I guess it is handy if your cards been stolen, but cos I use mine every day the activity would probably be just about the same, just with a couple of extra 0's on the end
