This is a copy of the thread here as I think that thread's for proper full sized cars etc.
http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?p=775867 After watching 2 collegues race their electric and petrol remote/radio controlled cars in the private car park of the retail park, I got very interested and now want one too. Now I know what type of bits I will need, but as I'm a beginner I was wondering if anyone knew any good trusty shops dealing in these (with a website) so that I can work out how much it will cost and see what shells/bodies I can get etc. Better still if anyone knows of any such shops in Manchester that would be great (apart from the Model Shop )Comments please, and how much should a beginner expect to spend on such a car?

Depends on how much you want to spend.
You could mess arround for a few weeks then get bored so you would be better just poping down to your local toy shop. Then again you could go the rout i did with 1/8 scale rally cross buying all your spares from London mail order and race a car worth over £1500. If your realy interested get an RC mag thats were i saw my first rally cross car. |

With a toy store around here, they only sell ready made ones designed for <10 years of age, I want one I can in future modify with readily available parts etc.
Any links for the RC mag? or are you reffering to a magazine that you buy in the newsagents? Any names of a good one?

www.modelsport.co.uk is a good site for rc stuff. I'd recommend you go for 1/10 scale electric stuff. It's the best for beginners, and can easily be upgraded if you get into it seriously.
Rather than buying for new, youre better off buying stuff used from somewhere like ebay. A couple of models you should look for are the Associated TC3 Factory Team and the Losi XXX-S. If you want anymore info, PM me and ill give you my MSN address. I race 1/10 scale indoors electric in Stockport, so if you do get into it seriously, come down .

There are probably some good R/C forums out there where you can find a generally more knowledgable userbase. So if you have a look around you might be able to find some good, more detailed info
Just a suggestion. Also BSODMike is into R/C cars IIRC

On my first electric, I spent £200 on a Tamiya Toyota Celica GT Four. For my first nitro, I spent £250-£300 on a DG Models Ferrari something or other (Never even painted the shell so haven't a clue what the model was!). I'm sure I've seen Tamiya electric models going for around 150!
For sheer fun, I'd go straight to nitro, but I'd be timid with the throttle. Even going from an averagely quick electric to an average nitro, was a big difference for me. I'd recommend HPi off the top of my head, but I've not bothered with RC cars for sometime and mine were on-road cars only. |

I've got an old HPI Nitro RS/4 MT which I've not touched in about 2 years - I'd be happy to sell it to you for a reasonable price - it's got a bit missing (worth about 19p - just a screw)
it cost me about 400 quid including the controller about 4 years ago, but it's still in great nick. pm me if you're interested - but I'll warn you - it's filthy I think last time I used it was pi$$ed at a BBQ and we were racing across fields - top speed of around 50mph so it's a bit mental*edit* Also had a couple of electric racers - but they weren't quite as stupid so gave them away! *edit 2* it's missing the a screw from the throttle linkage - $3 part num A896it's basically the old version of this>>> http://www.hpieurope.com/kit-info.ph...=10402&lang=en Last edited by scottyman; 31-05-2006 at 06:10 AM.. |

also R2R is Ready-to-Race - so it's assembled out of the box, rather than spending a night building it yourself which is fairly hard work!
