Why dont they allow just .uk for domains?

I have always wondered why nominet doesnt allow .uk domain names, as in say hexus.uk.
I read on wikipedia that before nominet took over you could get .uk names and some still
    exist.

Why on earth have they made up this retarded rule. I can only think of two reasons, because
people would have to buy multiple domain names and possibly people wouldnt want other
crapper ones. Seeing as it was possible before nominet took over to have .uk I think the first
    reason is pretty much invalid.

Does anyone know the real reason why?

Maybe its too late now - since domains like .com and .co.uk have set themselves in stone, people really can't be bothered to have .uk intrude their memories of addresses... well web newbies anyway, I'm fine

Nah seriously I have no idea :/ ah well at least we're special

I read the wiki but I didnt see anything about why. .uk was available before so its not like
it wasnt possible. Recently you couldnt get a .jp only .co.jp etc but they allow it now and
    its done them no harm.

time to start an online petition... a pity im too lazy to bother as is the british way.

I think they're saying it was so they could offer more domains, like www.hello.co.uk and www.hello.me.uk, etc.

Just to clarify I didnt mean that everything should only end in .uk
If that is the main reason for why there is no .uk its pretty weak as other countries
have those second level domains as well.

co.uk - commercial.UnitedKingdom, it’s the British equivalent of the American .com though like the .com it’s not an enforced policy to have a business to be allowed a .co.uk domain. Maybe .uk on its own isnt used much because if an organization based in the UK was to use just .org then it might not be seen as a UK organisation so doing somthing like org.uk identifies the site as a UK based site. Maybe i don't know .
