I find that alcohol taken in sufficient quantities can bring about all the effects of drunkenness. - Wilde
Seriously though a well kept red in the right glass, at the right temperature is beautiful. It's the same with cigars: badly kept, badly served or cheap ones are terrible. There are some really nice Italian reds going around, on the whole none of this Australian or new age places nonsense for me, Germans make some good whites but they went out of fashion some time ago due to a preference for sweeter more generalised wines hence getting difficult to get. But I really am a French red person, was white but now really do love either the subtler or more intricate reds. But essentially depends on what its accompanying. Spirits wise imo nothing beats Courvoisier or Remy Martin, but what really pisses me off are dickheads who go and get their cheapy vodka crap from asda and just drink to get pissed. Champagne is one of those things that's either brilliant or terrible - I would happily have a champagne breakfast everyday of my life were it good quality! You think I talk for a long time about this... don't get me started on coffee.

dave87, yup good points. I did write out another paragraphy but deleted it considering other people may not wish to read through another essay of mine!
Something I considered mentioning was that expensive doesn't mean good; however in the UK generally it does unfortunately - or certainly in the supermarkets. In France it doesn't by any means, however over here there's an evil conspiracy to drastically inflate prices - dunno if you're a member but the Wine Society break that rule with some great wines, considering the price I suggest anyone serious about wine does join. But somehow whenever we go to France on holiday we end up with half the stuff we came with being kicked out in favour of cases of wine from the local producers

Yup, the supermarket tends to have the good bottles at high prices, though it is still possible to find some decent deals out there... I think most of the wine we buy comes from Laithwaites, and their pricing is pretty good, and best of all, its delivered to your door. That said, there is nothing better than actually visiting the vinyards where the wine is produced, and buying it directly from the owner.
