| Everyone please read this now! - Swearing policy The rules on HEXUS are very simple. They should be abided by at all times. Foul language will not be tolerated and it seems people have started to do this more and more. The filter is there for a VERY good reason - trying to avoid its function is not allowed.
Do not do it - we will be handing out warnings on a new system now and this will revoke your access if you consistently offend. Its very easy to have a conversation and not be rude or abusive. Tone down the language if you are guilty of this. There will be no exceptions for this - its a family forum, words such as crap etc are acceptable, but derogatory and rude words are not. If you have to star any letters or the whole word out then you should not be saying it! Matt. |

| I agree that it's a family forum and all, but there is one thing I disagree on. Why do you disallow starring out words altogether? Obviously the person doing it has detected that they shouldn't be swearing so they add stars. I guess swearing helps people show their opinion more strongly.. but by adding stars it surely can't be a problem, it just seems silly. We're all going to start talking like Ned Flanders if we're not careful. Didly. |

| Well folks first off - it's your forum and not mine but.. ..my opinion is that self censorship is considerate to others anyway isn't it? And are you going to post an 'approved' list of words as I'm not sure if my sense of what isn't and is acceptable necessarily complies with yours. No disrespect intended, but I like this forum as it's generally polite and well mannered - and when someone is out of line people are usually pretty quick to point it out.. Te audire non possum. | radix lecti | I must admit I agree with the comments of Matt, but I have found that the forum is self censoring in its own - people who are rude/swear in their posts usually get a polite reminder from others & less help than those who are polite and think about their posts - its human nature. Do you really think by swearing someone shows stronger opinions than someone who does not swear?

| Guilty as charged, although in my defence (at least of the most recent case) I was merely quoting a film verbatim, where the swearword was an unfortunately essential element of the humorous dialogue....I believed the use of stars to be an acceptable compromise, obviously I was wrong. But when Radio 1 et al can play any song they like, leaving but the briefest pause around vulgarities, and leaving nothing to the immagination, where do 'family values' begin and end? And really, how many under 10s (a very idilistic estimation of the age at which most kids are entirely fluent in swearing) frequent these forums. Who are we afraid of offending exactly? I'm not saying that telling people to stop swearing is a bad thing (I've got two young kids and would be happy to see most if not all swear words banned altogether), I'm just wondering what the point is.... please don't shout at me |

| I'm guessing some of it, is just a desire to have a friendly and welcoming atmos, and a little bit to do with commmercial tie-ins. No-one wants to come here for support with their mesh pc etc and see us all turning the air blue. |

Even in the world of TV generally people find it perfectly acceptable to swear as long as it's beeped (even though you hear the F, or S, etc), and when it's subtitled it will either be purely stars counting the amount of letters, or the first letter and the rest being stars. Of course you can express yourself without swearing, but it's just nature pretty much to swear if your angry/stressed/ranting about things. |
