nuclear subs 2k away from my school

i got a letter from my school saying that if any nuclear submarines were to enter the naval dock yard 1 1/2 k away from my school (as they have done before) we would all be given pottasium tablets to take if one of their reactors mafunctioned. and we would have to stay at school for like a month while they tried to clear up some of the nuclear material or something
theres also some kind of escape plan involving helicopters, although they say this event happening is 1 in 1000 chance if there is a sub in the area. still quite cool hehe

do you have any idea what a potasium tablet does?
before you go saying 'wow cool' perhaps you should investigate...

think of it this way - if a nuclear reactor fails less than 2km away are you likely to get off scott-free? no. might you be irradiated beyond safe levels and thus cause cancer/death? yes.
and another thought - do you honestly believe they'd put potentially dangerous things so close to a school full of kids? in all honesty I can't see it either...

a potassium tablet will either do sweet F/A or kill you, depends on the dose. it stops all cellular functions if its one concentrated pill you're given.
well, knock it back and think of england...

lol well thats what the letter said buddy i can try and find it to scan it in for you if you dont believe me.
but i definitly no there could be nuclear subs that close because at whale island, a little place where some of my friends play hockey for the school there is the 2nd or 3rd (or even 1st considering it is portsmouth) most important navy base in the country so they could just bring some subs in.
also ive heard on the regional news recently about a month ago, a new law has been brought in saying that if a plane flys within 2 miles of protsmouth without responing to radio messages it can be shot down.

This don't seem to be going anywhere

Errrrrr so what if there is a bunker under number 10, I think you will find anywhere of importance has them, but what’s that got to do with anything? and as for country secrets errrm yes nothing that has been said I would call secret, anything that is kind of has the point defeated if people know about it

The main Nuclear Submarine base is in Scotland, at Faslane, as it has been for forty years, most of the warheads are stored and maintained at a weapons depot a few miles up the road from there.

The submarines aren't routinely loaded with nuclear weapons anyway so the only radiation source is the reactor in the boat. Nuclear reactors do not explode, they are designed not to. The fools at Three Mile Island in the USA, years ago demonstrated that fact. They did every wrong move in the book and it still didn't explode. Even Chernobyl didn't.

That leaves release of radioactive contaminants into the atmosphere. Given where the submarine's reactor is, that would be a little difficult since it's under the water line for a start. Could an accident on a submarine cause contamination problems round about it - yes.
Could it lock you up in a school for a month sucking on toxic potassium tablets - someone would have to be really stupid.

it is quite worrying how they can put WOMD so near to people, and only give em tablets to 'safeguard' against any possible disaster.

They aren't WOMD, they just use nuclear reactors for power.

Does anyone know what the Potasium pills actually do? If it was for death then I would have thought they would have given them scienide (sp) pills. Though I do know what happens when you put potasium in water.....
