    Interview

    Hi guys,

I had an interview recently at a very established organisation. My first interview with them (a telephone interview) went really went and the company was very impressed. So I thought, great. So I went for my final interview. The person who interviewed me clearly couldn't be bothered and didn't want to be there. He had his mobile phone on which kept ringing plus there was an occasion where you played with it while I was answering his question. In addition, he kept stopping / butting in when I was answering questions which put me off. Basically I thought it was very unprofessional, especially at such an organisation.

I feel that I won't get the job as I was very much put off but I remained as calm as possible. Any advice really? My dad mentioned that if I don't get the job, I should definitely complain.

If it were me (in my younger days, I'm retired now), I would phone the HR dept and tell them about it, or, at least find out what position your interviewer holds. If he is a junior, then ask for the top dog, it never hurts to go to the top and work down, but you can't work up in the same way.

No excuses for sloppy interviewing - I know, I've been interviewed a lot, and also done my fair share of interviewing.

    Good Luck !

He needs his bottom kicking, but who would kick it ?

Try and go to his manager. A well worded letter to the Director of HR wouldn't go amiss, but maybe wait to see if you get a job offer out of it ?

I agree, if you get an offer fine, then it doesn't really matter. If you don't then complain, explain the situation and you may get another interview with someone who actually cares.

What was the position...is it possible that he was deliberately shaking you up so he could see how you react to such pressure?

Thanks for the replies so far.

Well I thought about leaving it until I know if I got the job. However, I don't think it went well and as a result, might not get the job. I very much felt pressured.

It was for a placement position.

As some have said, it may have been a test (unlikely though - in the interviews I've been to, it hasn't happened, but that is not to say it is not possible...)

If they are bothered that little about new recruits, then are they really that good a company to work for? Even the law firm I spent two days with showed more interest in me than that...

Yeah - I was certainly surprised. I've spoken to my career's advisor at University. Luckily she knows the manager of HR quite well. So I might get an answer of how the interview went sooner.

After experiencing this, I am debating whether I should go for them. I was really excited and the company was the top of my list. But that's probably going to change. They did mention after my first interview that they were impressed.

Remember, after your interview and first day, you'll probably never see the HR managers again, you certainly won't work for them. See what your careers peeps say, but if they offer the job, take it. (Unless you find a better one in the mean time)
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Write a letter to the CEO?

Its not the fact your bitter about not getting the job, just that the interviewer was not valuing your time at all, or bothering to interview you properly.

That's bang out of order. I'd have been tempted to say something, but as someone said, it could have been a bizarre test to see your reactions.

If you don't get the job I'd complain to the big boys.

If the interview was set up through a recruitment agency or a headhunter then you could complain to them.

Alternatively, as others have mentioned, you could contact HR of the company in question.

Depending on who the manager was, contacting HR might achive nothing.

My manager cares little what our HR department thinks, i mean really, completely disregarded them telling us not to hire someone.

I applied to the company directly so no agency. I will chat with my career's advisor tomorrow and see what she says. If I don't get the job, I will complain.
