No love for Batman - Arkham City?

I know it's the busy season and all that jazz but I was a little suprised when I had a quick shufty through the search function and couldn't find anyone discussing what might be (for me at least) a serious contender for game of the year! And not just because Rocksteadys community manager's stunning either...

I'm going to try not to spoil anything because being a bit of a Bat-nerd I'd probably have taken someone's scalp if they'd given away too much before I'd had chance to play, but sufficed to say it takes everything I loved about Arkham Asylum and improves on it.

Oh, and I'm putting it out there right now, this game contains easily one of the top three if not the best boss encounter I can recall in this generation of console hardware. For all the sequel bashing in the wake of MW3/BF3 and Assassins Creed Revelations this is one that does things right

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

It was a great game Complete it the other day although i`m now going through mopping up the side missions.
I`m a big batman fan and Think Gearbox have really captured the Dark knight perfectly
Loved all the characters this time and thought the joker was much better this time especially without the stupid Titan boss fight at the end of arkham asylum

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

I'll tell you my thoughts next weekend when it comes out on PC. Looking forward to it, but the delayed release means it now comes out after Skyrim (can't wait to get home today and have a go), so it may actually end up being after Christmas before I get a look. And by then I'll have SWTOR

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

Been playing it on PS3, done the 2nd bit with Catwoman, met up with Bane, chasing and tracing phone calls whenever I hear a phone ringing. Currently tracking down Mr Freeze after doing the Police Station but keep getting sidetracked with various missions, muggings, training challenges etc. There is so much to do on it, absolutely love it.

3D on it is pretty good (I use stereoscopic 3D, not the coloured glasses which is actually an additional an option which is always good for the end user), gives some really good depth, still not as good as Killzone 3 though. Love the way the game looks and feels. When I first started playing the first hour or so I wasnt enjoying it as much as Arkham Asylum, I think it was a bit overwhelming, huge map to explore and the whole where do you go first. Now though that I have re familiarised myself with the mechanics of the gameplay / controls and getting my head around everything the game has to offer absolutely loving it.

I was also quite surprised that no one had done a thread on it, same with Dark Souls a few weeks back. There were loads of people playing and talking about Demons Souls when it landed, but it just seems to have fell by the wayside.

I think we need to start joke naming the threads to lure people in :

    Dark Minecraft Souls
    Arkham Battlefield City

That should get a few more hits on the other threads here!

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

I got Arkham Asylum for the PC last year, and I only completed about 40% of it, although I did like it, it just fell behind Fallout New Vegas and BFBC2 in the pecking order.

Hopefully get Arkham City on the 360 once it goes a bit cheaper and I've hopefully finished off Skyrim.

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

i loved Arkham City. the free flowing combat working with scenery, cut scenes and even Catwoman was awesome to play! This is game of the year for me (post MW3) however im still left with skyrim and SWTOR.

only beef: i didnt rate the ending too much

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

Glad to see I'm not alone, although I don't blame people for wanting to wait for the PC version, it does look particularly special!

The sheer scale compared to Arkham Asylum did put me on the back foot to begin with, along with the insane number of Riddler challenges but after a few hours it all felt very manageable... Something that can't be said about Assassins Creed Brotherhood which I'm also playing through right now, that's a case of almost too much to do and too little focus. I think Rocksteady struck a good balance there.

The ending.. yeah, that final fight didn't feel like the crescendo I thought it was building to but that and the few loose threads they can tie up with DLC hopefully. The final shot of Batman walking out of the city towards the police was pure "Death in the family" though for any comic book fans. The "song" over the end credits was inspired as well!

I prefered the ending this time to the arkham asylum ending. Was a lot more inkeeping with the Batman universe this time around.

Agreed on the final scene being inspired.

Complete the sasz side mission today

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

which boss fight did you think was the best then? I loved the Freeze fight

Some of the side missions are excellent, very enthralling, but those AR missions drive me insane, never get them quite right.

It didnt leave the drive from the moment I bought it till it got beaten, but like GoW3 and several other games, its been consigned to the shelf atm, just too many games coming out that I want to play. Somehow thats lessening the experience I never thought I would complain about being able to afford games lol. Right now MW3 is glued into the drive and probably won't come out for a while.

On a side note, I have Dark Souls in the PS3 atm, started the game again with a warrior type and finally beat that first level, went back to my magician and am still getting my arse kicked on it. The game is awesome and damn it feels good when you finally progress, but its soooooo hard.

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

Yup, freeze fight here too. I was playing with hints off so it was very trial and error and when I caught him out with something it immedaitely made me feel clever. The Titan thugs didn't make you feel like Bats, the fight with Mr Freeze was the perfect antidote to that So far I've done all the AR missions and sidequests and I've only got twenty or so Riddler trophies and a dozen or so predator challenge rooms to clock then it's on to new game plus...

The sadistic part of me that enjoys games like Ninja Gaiden black wants Dark Souls badly but I know anything that frustrates me will be back out of the drive quickly in favour of something else considering how much there is to play right now. That's a summer title next year I think.

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

Ninja Gaiden was my favourite game on the Xbox, loved it, have even gone back and played it again on the 360, NG2 didnt come close imo, still great tho.

Demon Souls is extremely frustrating, but the feeling of acheivement is worth it, I will get Dark Souls a bit further down the line tho.

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

I am struggling on the AR missions. Trying to swoop and then glide through the tunnel is driving me to want to murder someone hehe.

    Finished deadshot side mission tonight

Freeze fight was awesome. Solomon grundy fight wasnt great although i do think overall the boss fights this time around where much better than in asylum

Re: No love for Batman - Arkham City?

I gave up on the first one when I got stuck in a boss battle which I just couldn't win, despite finding everything else up until then ridiculously easy. Gameplay felt more like button mashing with lots of enemies on screen alot of times anyway. Also was relatively dull, a game more for a serious fan of batman, than for those with a casual interest. As such, my interest in the sequel is zero.
