Does anyone else find the concept of a pure flight sim on a control pad a bit of an odd concept?
Or are there yokes available for xbox?

    A bit, yeah.

It depends where you're coming from. If you're a sim-lover, everything I see suggests this will be a disappointment. FSX v2 it ain't.

If you want a flight game, on the other hand, it's worth a try .... at the price.

But the way I see it, it's a hybrid between a limited trial and a new(-ish) marketing model. Well, new to MS Flight Sim anyway. That is, minimal locations and minimal planes, free of charge. Then a few bucks here and a few bucks there, and before you know it, you've forked out more than the old (and relatively expensive) inclusive sim would have cost.

So, while it's hard to look down my nose at a freebie, I think I'm going to, and stick with FSX, for now at least. I might give the XBox one a try, if it can just be downloaded, burned and installed, and will run without a net connection. That, I haven't checked yet, but I'm doubtful. My Xbox isn't on my network, and I'm not putting it on for this.

But don't people end up buying the extra scenory for FSX anyway?

So long as its the right kind of granular nickle and diming, I don't mind too much. What I don't want is to have to buy 5 £10 packages, to get the 10% of features I want.

This. And hopefully the packages will be better integrated/compatible with each other.

As you say, it depends on the granularity.

Yes, there are expansion packs for FSX, and I have no problem with that concept. But the "basic" game is also full-featured and stand-alone. This looks like a very limited version, in the "free" configuration, and if you want much choice of planes, locations etc, then it starts costing.

That, of course, is fine if it's what you want, and it certainly gives a chance to try it without forking out a fairly substantial sum (for a game/sim). Which is a good thing. But from what I read, it's looking like the thin end of the wedge.

More worryingly, FSX is a sim that can be used as a game. This is showing signs, admittedly from user reviews not personal experience, of being a game that's going to badly disappoint simmers. Of course, MS may well have taken the calculation that profit from a successful game far exceeds profit from a successful sim, and they may, for all I know, be right. All I can say is that, personally, this doesn't have me terribly excited.

Will the COD generation lose interest when they realise you can't blow stuff up?

Better not be the one the mother-in-law is on, especially as it's only just left Hawaii, IIRC.

Actually, contrary to the popular myth, in my case, the M-in-L is a wonderful old duck, and I don't have a bad word to say about her. Not one.

As it happens, it's academic anyway. I just checked, and I was wrong. Hawaii was on the way Down Under, so it was about 3 weeks ago. She's now on the way back, part way between Bali and Vietnam. That ought to to be far enough to be out of Turb's range.

    Phew!

Re: Microsoft Flight - Free download

Ive been playing it the last few days and it is very different to fsx. The mission mode seems to cater more for the casual flight sim player (thats me ). Ive played a few missions and most were flying through rings, collecting geocaches around the map and taking people to destinations. It kinda of brought back memories of pilotwings for the n64.
It feels surprisingly natural to use an xbox 360 pad for it. The analogue triggers are used to control the rudder whilst the shoulder buttons adjust the throttle. Hold A to put parking brake on and B puts the landing gear up or down. The d pad adjusts the trim.
It was very easy to get up and fly compared to my first time on fsx. However there are a number of flying aids enabled by default which can be disabled and there are a number of more advanced aircraft options for the more hardcore flight sim player (though It doesnt seem to have anyway near the amount of options fsx had - though flight only includes a couple of light aircraft). Some of the missions are a bit odd and contradicting - one was giving you safety advice to not fly so low and another mission had you flying very low to collect a cache. There are very few missions at the moment and they are all very similar
Ive kinda of got bored of it now (like most flight sims ive tried). The scenery is not that great so its pretty boring once up in the air. Trying to land in ridiculous places is what I usually resort too .

So in summary it was a fun demo, but lacked content (the current dlc is very expensive too). It seems to be aimed at casual players who would probably get bored after a few days or crave something more advanced which flight does not deliver. I may give it a go in another few months if they add content but I dont see this "taking off" (excuse the pun).
