2D mode, with an overclocked GPU

    Hey,

My 8800GT has been wielding a hefty overclock for some time using the Nvidia control panel + system utilities.

The other day I was doing the same to my secondary PC (4670) using AMD/Ati Overdrive, while I was doing this it suddenly struck me that the AMD utility was clearly only overclocking like a "game mode", 2d settings remained unchanged and it would stay in a low power state unless the power was needed.

I'm now suddenly really worried that ive been running my Nvidia card at max clocks while just browsing etc.

Does Nvidia still downclock with custom clocks inputted based on power needs? Do I need to set up my own custom rules with lower clocks? (If so, what are the sort of clockspeeds I should be using for a 2d/Aero mode).

It says "all settings on this page are dynamic when applied" but I dont know if that means theres sort of a speedstep thing going on (which I want)

    Hope you guys can help.

I couldn't tell you if the 8800GT has 2D and 3D clock modes, but you could try running GPU-Z and monitoring the current being used to see if it stays constant, or drops when not gaming.

Hopefully someone else might have a more direct answer!
