Browsing at 640X480 - best GFX for a Asus P5K board...

Tried to boot up HL2 this evening and everything went a bit fuzzy - now I'm browsing old school - 640x480 & 4 bit goodness all the way....

Reminds me of my Pentium 166MMX.....nostalgia lol....

Anyways, my research ability being a little limited, what's the best bang for buck replacement for my now defunct Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB....poor little fella....

Don't want to spend a fortune £150 tops....

    Any suggestions?

Seriously, I need help. I had to scroll the page three times to write this. It's not big and it's not clever (especially not on a 24" monitor. I can literally pixel peep. TIA.

Sounds like it's reverted back to default vga drivers.

But if it's refuseing to do anything better than 640x480x4bit then there could be something else at issue.
    What OS are you using?

It might not be the card but the monitor that's at fault.
If the EDID data has been corrupted then replaceing the card will not change anything as basically the hardware cannot read the monitor settings to know what it can display.

Have you got another card to test it with?

At the same time for around £125 you're looking at a 5770 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-X...-DL-DVI-I-HDMI
    or £150 for the 768mb gtx460 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/768MB...DVI-D-Sub-HDMI

A bit over budget for the 1gb gtx460, the increased memoey would be better for your res and it's a faster card not just more memory.

Re: Browsing at 640X480 - best GFX for a Asus P5K board...

Problem is intermittent - further research indicates it may well be a problem with the PSU....

...I was looking to buy a PSU for the downstairs rig to get it back up and running, so might do that and plug it into this machine first to test it out...

Thanks for the card advice though - look like good value for money...

Depending on how intensive gaming wise you are there's always the GTS250 (basically a more efficent model of the 9800GTX). Might be a bit low spec for what you want though, my mate's 8800Ultra recently went kaput and he said these are better for performance and a lot cooler
