GeForce FX 5650 Go 128MB vs. Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB

hi everyone

which one would be best chucked in a laptop?

my options are:

a) get a lovely new dell lappy with a 128MB GFFX 5650 Go

b) get a lovely new voodoo import with a 64MB 9600 (standard)

c) wait for god knows how long for someone to chuck a 9600 Pro 128MB in a laptop - if at all

im probably swaying most towards option a assuming the 5650 wont be far behind the 9600... what do you all reckon? - or are the extras of the 9600pro worth waiting for?

im not bothered about the odd 3DMark btw... the odd thousand i sure am but not the odd one

The Dell.

I wouldn't normally buy any other laptop unless it was an amazing AMD config. Those are few and far between and normally too expensive anyway. Pair the GFFX with the Pentium M and you have an amazing gaming laptop

I dunno if you've got or used any dell laptops before, but I HATE them with a passion, the recent ones we've got here at work have got a really really crap battery, we've had 3 out of the 6 new £2k laptops have the battery completely fail, 1 lost its LCD display and then had its motherboard fail, and these are only like 6 months old tops.

On the other hand the old inspirons 7500's that we've got are solid (quite literally) as a rock.

Maybe considure another manufacturer?, as my impression of recent dell laptops isn't great.

Got a Dell C840 here, had it two months and I love it. It seems much better engineered than any of the other branded laptops I've used in the past. I've not had to use the support but I know of others who got the same laptop on the same scheme and they've had next-day on-site repairs, even stretching to someone coming out to replace the supplied mouse as the pins were bent!

so you all reckon that the abilities of the 5600 are close enough to the 9600 for me not to worry about the graphics card?

i.e. you are saying the 9600 is only slightly better?

the 5600(standard) is better than the 9600(standard), but worse than the 9600pro, so, unless you can get a mobility 9600pro the 5600 is the best.

You can't really judge performance of closely matched mobile/laptop graphics cards based on the desktop equivalent. A lot depends on what RAM the cards use (onboard, dedicated) and how fast this is accessed (DDR, SDR etc).
