    Slightly confused...6870 vs 5850

I am in the market for a graphics card for my new build.

I had settled on the Radeon 5850.

BUT...with the 6000 series coming out, is it better to wait and get a 6870?

From what I understand, the 68xx series replaces the 57xx series but the 6870 is faster than a 5850 and consumes less power. If this is correct and it is priced accordingly, I am surely better to wait and get a 6870 rather than a 5850?

    Thanks.

Wait, you've only got to wait until next week.

Yeah, so you are saying the 6870 is better than the 5850?

    Re: Slightly confused...6870 vs 5850

I'm not saying anything, but the 6870 is expected to fill in for the 5850.

The 6xxx series launch next week so i would keep any GPu purchases on hold until then for a.) to see what the new cards offer up and b.) expected price price drops on Nvidia's cards and/or AMD's 58xx cards.

Edit: Although saying that, the 58xx pricing has remained pretty stagnant, even a year later and after Nvidia's competition.

    Re: Slightly confused...6870 vs 5850

Wow it seems like the 5000 series were released last week or something!

But yeah I'd also wait a while, if anything you should be able to get the current cards a bit cheaper.

6870 is a replacement for the 5770 and the 6970 is the replacement for the 5870

    Re: Slightly confused...6870 vs 5850

Why have AMD caused so much grief with there naming system. Changing the Brand to AMD from ATI was Ok but completely messing up the number system is just plain stupid. If it confuses the enthusiasts imagine what it will do for Joe public in PC world.

    [/rant]

Definatly wait the new stuff as its so close and then buy upon the results and prices

    Re: Slightly confused...6870 vs 5850

I still think it makes more sense than giving the same product like 5 different names and giving several products the same name like nvidia, making it confusing/misleading even for enthusiasts.

    Re: Slightly confused...6870 vs 5850

    It's not confusing at all.

All you need to do is wait for the benchmarks and see what each card costs. Then you make a decision, simple as that. Who cares what number your card has, as long as it's good value.

I do wonder what'll happen when they get back round to the 9000s. I mean, I've got a Radeon 7000 at home already - am I ahead of the curve?

And how dare you suggest that a Radeon 9800 is slow: it runs Neverwinter Nights like nobody's business

Somewhere I still have my 9800SE with it's unlocked pipes and massive overclock, that was perhaps my favorite graphics card after my voodoo 3 with a pentium 3 heatsink bolted onto it.
