Do I need to format with new GPU? (Also, Palit)

    Hi there,

I'm buying myself a 670 this week and I'm wondering if I'll need to format my PC when I install the drivers (my friend says I do, but I don't believe him! ). I currently have Intel HD 4000 drivers installed.

Also, the card is the Palit reference. I nearly picked up an EVGA for the same price, buy Dabs' user area was down over the weekend and the card was OOS on Monday (sooooo annoyed! ). What are Palit like in terms of support and warranties?

    Thanks

As far as I know Palit's warranties are covered only by the retailer (I don't think you can RMA them to Palit).

You certainly won't have to reinstall Windows, just install the latest nvidia drivers from the website after installing the card.

    No, lol

    Again No.

You have two options, you can remove the Intel HD 4000 Drivers/disable video or two you can just install the new GPU drivers. Download the new drivers for the card now from the nVidia website.

    Uninstall old drivers.
    Put new card in.
    Install new drivers.

    Done.

Thanks. I thought not! Can I have two sets of drivers installed at once then (i.e., Intel + NVIDIA)?

Yes, it's no problem to have them installed together. If you later remove your nvidia card for some reason, Windows will just switch back to running the Intel drivers.

    Thanks very much!

Would you guys recommend Precision X over Afterburner for OC?

One thing I would recommend is looking at the non-reference 670s if you can afford the little bit extra - the reference cooler according to most reviews is a bit noisy.

I'm stretched for the £300. I was aiming for around £250 (7870 price) but the performance gain for the £50 is significant. I think the 670 would last me longer than a ~7870 as I doubt many games will go above BF3 demanding in the next few years. And I like the airflow of the reference - I don't really want the hot air going back in to my case (and out of my H100)

Not recent but: I bought a Gainward 7900GT (same company) card through Scan, returned to Scan 11 months later as it died.
I had a feeling the warrenty claim might take a while as the card was no longer in production, so bought myself a really cheap 8600gt to be getting on with. Glad I did as the claim took a couple of months to process in the end. I asked Scan what was happening with my claim, they gave Gainward distributers a nudge and got told to ship me a Palit 8800GT.
So, long delay, but card replaced with one that was 3 times faster so I came away feeling they did care about the customer. That goodwill gesture must have worked, as when I came to upgrade that card I bought a Palit GTX460, again through Scan

I'm in a similar situation - a Palit GTX 460 which is completely dead, sent back to Scan under warranty, it's been just under a month now without any progress yet. I'm guessing it will be replaced with a GTX 560, as that's the nearest one Palit has.

I got the impression in my case the delay was at the Palit distributors. I wasn't in a massive hurry and probably could have chased up Scan long before I did.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you

Hmm okay. Thanks for all of your help. I'll be purchasing today to get it for tomorrow! I guess buying through SCAN is the best choice as they're good with support
