EVGA SC GTX 660 vs 660ti

    Hey there,

Planning on purchasing a custom gamer 20i build in the near future and I was wondering about the GPU to choose, I'm a gamer/video editor on a reasonably tight budget the 660ti is doable but for what seems to be minimal frame rate difference when gaming I'm struggling to see if the extra £47 cost is worth the 660ti.

    Thanks in advance.

I think you'll be happy with either to be honest. Just depends how important the £47 is to you. I went with a 660ti and it's great.

Also don't bother with the EVGA leaf blower style cards - stump up an extra £12 and go for the MSI Power Edition as the cooler on the MSI is SOOOOOO superior to the EVGA it isn't even funny!

Re: EVGA SC GTX 660 vs 660ti

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm purchasing the build from 3XS and they only list the EVGA 600 series I will enquire via email as to whether they'd do a similar deal with the MSI though and think about it.

    Thanks for the info.

Do you plan to OC the card.

If so, I would save the £47 if your are skint and light push the 660 a bit higher and get that little more out of it. Will of course not be as fast as the TI version, but will help increass FPS.

Yeah, I do plan on overclocking, I've been looking around at benchmarks etc, and overclocked 660s seems to be getting almost exactly the same performance as a 660ti (it's not that far behind in frames in the first place) I think I'll save the £47 and put it towards an ssd in the new year!

You will notice a difference with the SSD for windows on it and if your like me have a 2nd one for gaming, games work better to.

What games do you plan to play and at what resolution.

The great thing about the 660 is that you don't have to pay more to get the MSI version, you pay less!
Although it's not the Power Edition it's still better than EVGA.

GTX660 will be just great for those games, you'll have to dial some settings back for FC3 though.

Value for money on those games the GTX660 is ideal.

Hmm - but similarly a 660ti overclocked might get to around the performance of a 670 so once again it really comes down to how important is that £47 to you or have you established that everything would run fine on a 660 ti at reference speeds?

I'm pretty sure Scan will be able to mix and match the MSI / EVGA cards so that shouldn't be a problem to change them over. It's unlikely that one will be considerably larger than the other as I would assume they are both dual slot height and a similar length.

[Edit: However SSD's do make a massive difference to the general speed / performance of Windows so I would definitely recommend going for a 660 and an SSD over a 660ti and not having an SSD ].

Re: EVGA SC GTX 660 vs 660ti

this is what I plan on doing:

    Buying this

    1 Scan V20 System
    1 Scan Value System Range
1 500W Corsair Builder Series PSU
    System Case
    1 Corsair Carbide Series 200R & 500W Corsair PSU
    Motherboard
    1 Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H, Intel Z77 - USB3 & SATA6 Support!
    CPU
1 Intel Core i7 3770K, Ivy Bridge, 3.5Ghz, Quad Core & Hyperthreading, 8MB Smart Cache
    Memory - DDR3
    2 8GB Total (2x4GB) Corsair 1600MHz
    Graphics Cards
1 Use onboard Intel Graphics - Perfect for Home/Office use!
    System Drive
    1 500GB Western Digital Blue, SATA6, 7200rpm, 16MB Cache
    Optical Drive
    1 Samsung SH-224BB - 24X DVD Writer
    Operating system
    1 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit - OEM

And sticking a GTX 660 in it + an ssd at a later date But i'd like to double check that the 500w psu can handle that?

I have run it through a few psu calcs and they do seem to ok it (around the 420w- 450w mark under max load)but theres no harm in double checking with actual people. Hopefully some headroom for an aftermarket cooler too.

I do have a 750w laying around but i'd rather avoid the hassle of changing it out until I really need too.

Forget about the ssd and get a 660 ti. For gaming it's better to spend money on gpu instead of ssd.

Re: EVGA SC GTX 660 vs 660ti

I think you're making a good decision with the GTX 660, I was going to go for the Ti too but if you check the benchmarks, the difference isn't *THAT* major between the two for £60 anyway. There is obviously a difference in performance, I just don't think it justifies the extra £60 spend.
