    Watercooling worth it?

Hey I just wanted to know if you guys think its worth it, Im getting 2 r9 280x, the ASUS DCUii with the EK block forthis specific card block, do you think its worth it? For sure its going to look great but if I'm not water cooling it Im getting 2 sapphire r9 280x Vapor-X triX , witch would perform better, and I'm OCing that so what do you think?

    Re: Watercooling worth it?

Getting 2 GPU's with down blowing fans can cause a problem. Do you enough room between the two card to get good airflow. The top of my R9 290 gets HOT, and all that hot air would be going into your top card.
Water cooling GPU's is expensive. Cheapest most reliable option is just buy one 290X.

    Re: Watercooling worth it?

I know it is expensive but the results of 2 280x is amazing in terms of performance, and since my case has enough room for the radiators I was wondering if it WILL help the gpus stay cooler or not, since my motherboard does NOT have much space between the slots(enough for 2 cards but the airflow in between would not be great)

    Re: Watercooling worth it?

plus, I already have a custom loop watercooling in my computer for my CPU and RAM, so it would not be that bad, 2 blocks plus a second rad

They will certainly stay cooler being watercooled! I watercool my R290 card with an EK full cover block and the temp at idle is currently 34c

Couldnt agree more my 290x rarely tops over 42 on full load rather than a noisy 95 degrees with the stock cooler.

    Watercooling is definitely worth it

From my experience graphics cards benefit more from watercooling than CPU's (currently running 3-way Titans under water - idle at about 25 degrees, top out at 45)

I know Its late for me to answer but I actually went for 1 r9 290 watercooled and I have the same temps as you guys, and I could OC it to 1100MHz on the core, and stay at those temps, thank you all

Worth it in what way? With what kind of an OC did that enable - did you try on air first? I only ask because, while I'm definitely tempted (particularly to try and get the most out of my ageing i7 960), I'd be reluctant to drop £300 on watercooling when I could get another card for SLI at the same price... although I'd probably consider it in lieu of a third.

It seems strange to justify it through temperature independent of noise-level and performance. I suppose there's the consideration of the effect running at high T has on the card's endurance in the long-term but I ran my old GTX 580 with quite a heavy OC on air at ~80C full load for almost 4 years without any problems. If I was going to fork out the kind of cash required for a watercooling setup I'd be wanting to see noticeable gains in performance.

    Re: Watercooling worth it?

Watercooling is a *must* for any serious overclocking, but you can get by with a mild OC in normal gaming by being sensible and savvy with your air cooling.

Most of my system is still air cooled and I only got an H100 because it was cheap.
I start griping if my system idle temps go above 25ºC and I flip out if anything goes past 40º under load!!

    Re: Watercooling worth it?

Im not in the boat of spending any more on Water cooling as I have been doing it for years (and spend a damn fortune doing so). I would definitely go for water cooling on a GPU for the total silence while gaming, the massive reduction in temps when pushing the card (or even stock) and the headroom gained in overclocking when I need to vs air cooling. If it extends its life as well then bargain

It seems strange to justify it through temperature independent of noise-level and performance.
Im not sure exactly what you mean here, maybe if he had said he maxes his cards out at 45 degrees in total silence would that have changed your comment?? I will take dropping 50 degrees on full load (and not sounding like a rabid hair dryer) on a stock 290X by water cooling any day of the week.

    Re: Watercooling worth it?

I got my first decent gaming PC in Dec 2011 it had two GTX 570s and whilst I was gaming it was really noisy so I read lots about water cooling and decided to buy water blocks for both my GPUs and CPU and MB it has completely silenced my PC even when under full load drawing 600 Watts from the mains it is only makes about 20 dB of noise its great for late night gaming.
The main thing to remember is to reduce noise you need to keep fan speed low and have a large cooling area, I have a 9 x 140mm rad and it cools 2 x GTX 780s and a i7 2500k running at 4.7Ghz very easy even in a room with 27 deg C ambiant room temp.

Yes, it would've, but you've factored in the noise and longevity aspects which weren't mentioned in the other comment.

My point was that it seemed a bit pointless telling us the card is idling at 25C and peaking at 45C without providing any frame of reference. We have no idea what kind of improvement (if any) we're seeing in terms of noise and performance relative to air, or if there is any perceived benefit in terms of card endurance. For all we know, it might be running at 45C under load at stock clocks with 6 fans in push/pull on a 360mm x 140mm rad and sounding like a leaf-blower on steroids – in which case I would far rather spend my money on another graphics card instead.

Saying "watercooling is definitely worth it" and then not providing any information to qualify/substantiate that isn't particularly helpful, hence my questions.

    Re: Watercooling worth it?

Ok well Im saying it is worth it because : I gained room on overclocking, got much lower temperatures AND the heat dissipated by the cooler (its a sapphire tri-x, pretty quiet but...) was toasting the rest of the PC by warming up the rest of the case and if I want to add airflow it means adding more fans witch means more noize, so sometimes we need to consider the noize not only caused by the cooler itself but by whats around it
