Well we are coming towards the end of the current GPU generation AFAIK,and there is a lot of noise that the GTX880 will be released sometime this year. If you have waited this long,I would definitely wait for the higher end Maxwell based cards.

I tend to agree with CAT but as a new GPU release is not imminent in the next few weeks, and if you're in need of something now I'd just get that 6GB 780. I suspect for the majority of games your 920(?) @ 4.2 should be fine with 780.

Re: Upgrading to 1 GTX 780 from 580 SLI in my system advice please

There are two big trade shows that will be held in the first half of August, there's the Siggraph 2014 conference on computer graphics in Canada from August 10th to 14th and Gamescom in Cologne is from August 13th to 17th, nVidia has exhibitor space in each of these and it is being wildly rumoured that there will be two high end SKUs being unveiled in Gamescon (most likely) or possibly Siggraph.

So like Cat and Wam7, I'd also say that at the moment maybe you should back away from the send button and empty your shopping trolley for now, with new hardware on the horizon prices of current hardware can only go down.

To be honest it's never the best waiting for something since for all you know it could have a massive price tag or it might get delayed, I'd just get the 780 now or if you want a better card a 780ti.

I know what you mean about the waiting, it can be frustrating. But how would you feel if just two weeks after buying a new graphics card a brand new card came out with a 20% gain in performance over the card that you bought and then because of this new card the card you bought was given a big price drop?

I still say it is worth waiting a few weeks unless you are in a position where you have to buy now because a GPU had failed or something.

Or buy a 780 from EVGA and just use their step up program if 800 series comes out in the next 3 months.

Ask yourself, are you up for waiting longer than 3 months in case of a new launch? If the answer is no then you can't lose with my suggestion.

Not all of EVGA's high end SKUs are included in the step up program, so check before buying if you are relying on this as an option, I think they tend to wait a considerable amount of time before adding a new model to the list by which time the GTX780 purchased now would be outside of the required time within which to qualify for the Step up option.

Well that changes things, I knew there were limited stocks for initial step ups for new SKUs but I've not noticed a significant delay when adding the X80 SKUs to the program.

When 8XX launches I will keep an eye on the behaviour of EVGA to see how it pans out, thanks for the correction.

Re: Upgrading to 1 GTX 780 from 580 SLI in my system advice please

580 SLI is still fast, if VRAM is not a limit to you, i would wait out for the 800 series, if VRAM is an issue, many cards on the market right now would be an upgrade.

I would consider R9 290/GTX 780 upgrades overall and great choices, there is also great deals on 280x/GTX 770 usually.

280x/ GTX 770 will be a small percentage faster than overclocked 580 SLi.

I would also look at possibly moving on a bit with your platform, the first gen i7's do hold their own, but they are also quite a bit behind, but if it is not an issue to you, by all means ignore me

It's an X58 mobo so that sounds like it would be a first gen 9xx serious i7, if I'm not mistaken.

I've got an EVGA GTX 780 class. dual bios. I think it is possible to make the most of slightly dated cards for great prices. Mine's 3GB, but you're right it is big. I've got a Fractal case, it fits in that okay!
