    thinking about a 290x from a GTX 460

    Hi all,

been ages since i have spent any money on my PC, im still on an Q9550 775 socket which seems to be doing well considering...

im starting to play BF4 and its really struggling on 1920x1200 unless on low/medium... im thinking of upgrading to a 290x which is £260...

now for me thats alot of money, but at the same time i feel like treating myself but a few users on forums (HUKD) have mentioned to wait for the 900 series nvidia cards to come out in next few weeks (is that a good plan hexus) ?

    thoughts?

edit: amazon have a few 290x for £235 from warehouse if anyones interested also

    Re: thinking about a 290x from a GTX 460

Until the 900 series comes out, it will take some time plus the prices will be inflated at the beginning and bigger that 15-20% performance rise is unlikely.

So for value you might as well for the cards available now.

It is me only that I can't find 290x on Amazon for under £300 (or so) let alone for £235...

    Re: thinking about a 290x from a GTX 460

If you can get the r290x for £235 go for it, its a great card that will handle any 1080p you throw at it and a lot of 1080p+ stuff. I prefer Nvidia cards myself but I wouldn't bet on a 900 series card being better bang for your buck.

    Re: thinking about a 290x from a GTX 460

A good idea will be to wait for the 900 series announcement and see if you can catch a 770/780 for around the price of the 290x. A fair few places will likely have a sale on, and if they don't you can probably catch a used 770/780/290x from someone upgrading. Worst comes to worst you've only wasted a few days, best case you've saved a bunch.

This sounds like a good idea, new hardware announcements can have a knock on effect where suppliers with stock of older hardware will want to clear through units before the newer hardware starts to drop in price once they have been price established in the market.

Apologies - should have been less lazy!

Per a quick search, the GeForce GTX 980 and the GeForce GTX 970 will be released on September 19, 2014

Get a well cooled R9 290 or 290X, not the reference ones that throttle back when hot.
    My sapphire R9 290 will play BF4 at ~120fps on ultra @ 1080p.
Much better value than the Nvidia cards.
I'm not a fanboy, but nvidia are overpriced for any small performance gains they offer.

That's excellent performance you're getting there, I get between 120 to 145 with my GTX 780 Ti, these are from £380 to £540 with a few special editions that come in at a higher price than this while a 290X starts at £270 to £405 and there's a single MSI model that seems to stand alone at a shade over £450.

Unlike you I am a fanboy and in my books AMD, Intel and nVidia are the best.

Looking at the above price differences if I were to now build a new gaming PC with a top tier GPU I would be seriously looking at a 290X as the difference in price would leave me with enough money to get a fairly decent SSD with it.

    Re: thinking about a 290x from a GTX 460

The 290x would be a good upgrade as said before because using mantle could really help with your old cpu especially at under £300 Just dont buy a reference card as you will end up spending more money on it to buy a aftermarket cooler for it to keep it queiter and much cooler.

Don't forget to factor in the Heat of a AMD card. Id personally go Nvidia for this reason. Is it worth spending time and money on the after market cooling..
