    R9 290(x) with Mantle or GTX 970?

All the reviews of the GTX970 are coming out now and they compare performance in games to the reference models of other cards.
Measuring performance on games like BF4 the GTX970 looks great, but the comparisons don't take into account the performance boost offered by Mantle for AMD cards.
So my question is, in the real world using mantle would an R9 290 beat the performance of the GTX 970?
I currently use the R9 290 and with mantle enabled at 1080p on ultra settings I get about 110fps.

Re: R9 290(x) with Mantle or GTX 970?

I am myself wondering if i should sell my R9 290 Tri-X OC in order to get the new GTX 970.

Most reviews that I have seen till now show that the GTX 970 is around 10% faster than the R9 290, and it does that by consuming much less power. Above that, it is priced very competitively (below or around same price of the R9 290).

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ll,3941-8.html

From this article, in Battlefield 4, the GTX 970 outperforms the R9 290 and almost matching the R9 290x with both R9 cards running mantle.
And in Thief, the GTX 970 outperforms both of the R9 cards with mantle.

The biggest effects with Mantle are seen if you have a slower CPU,not a fast one like an overclocked Core i7. So its more important to know what CPU your have.

Then why do you want to upgrade? I appreciate the ooo shiny factor. but you're going to see no benefit by going from 110 to 140 fps. Even on a 120hz monitor I think you'd struggle to notice it.

another thing to consider is Dx12, which from what ive heard is just M$'s take on mantle,

like Herulach said, i would hold back for a while till we see how it all plays out. for the moment it would be a costly upgrade for very little performance upgrade (or downgrade if you play AMD optimized games like BF)

I'm thinking about replacing my msi gaming 290 with a 970 just for the temps!

If i was you and had a 290 I personally wouldn't upgrade unless I could sell my 290 for a fair amount. Nvidia hit the nail on the head with the 970 with performance and price. I plan to get one soon. They also OC really well.

Don't think it's worth getting a new 970 for your 290 unless you can sell your 290 for a relatively high price... the 290 still holds its own at gaming, don't discredit AMD on that.

The 290 -> 970 is a side upgrade (or even slight downgrade). But what you get in return is a much cooler room and less fan noise...
