Gtx 970, which one is it going to be?

    Hey guys

New here, so i would like to know because i got that gpu itch again, which gtx 970 is the best of the best, bells n whistles n all, because at the moment i have a tri x 290 which i just recently bought brand new for 210 and its ok, but you see its just like i said that itch to get this gpu is annoying me, and i know there may be some better gpus coming soon and i was trying to hold off until then but i figured i might as-well get the the 970, sell the 290 and deal with the incoming gpu shocker when the time comes.
So basically which one, and what do you think in general about the decision.

    Thanks in advance

Re: Gtx 970, which one is it going to be?

I don't think the 970 would give enough of a boost to warrant the outlay but if you're dead set on it the Asus Strix, MSI Gaming and EVGA ACX all seem to be garnering good reviews - especially since the fans stop when the GPU is idling.

Aria have stock Palit 970s for £250 although there are only 3 left -

Thanks for the reply, im not really feeling the the strix but the msi and the evga are tempting, and these are the ones im trying to decide over, and what about the gigabyte one.

Re: Gtx 970, which one is it going to be?

I went for the MSI version, it arrived on Tuesday and am very happy with it. I already had an Asus 280X Top, but like you I got the itch when I read about the 970's. Whilst it wasn't strictly necessary to upgrade, the performance boost is noticeable and will mean I can max out Elite Dangerous and GTA5 when they're released .

The other cool feature of the 970 is how quiet it is. The fans don't even spin when I'm not gaming, and even when they are spinning I can barely hear them.

Re: Gtx 970, which one is it going to be?

I ordered a pair of Palit Jetstreams on Scans today only, but then I noticed the Gainward Phantoms were a little less so I want to change my order to those.

Going from SLI GTX 680s to 970s, didnt really need to but Im gaming on an Asus Swift ROG so more performance and Vram is good for that, and it looks like this is going to be the best opportunity time to sell my 680s to recoup a lot of the cost. Also I like that the palit and gainward cards had 3x mini DP outputs which should enable them to run surround Gsync monitors which is a future plan of mine too.

I saw the phantom as-well and i am a bit surprised to see that there aren't any reviews about it, unless you know of any?

Re: Gtx 970, which one is it going to be?

I didnt find any reviews on it, but it appears to be using the same PCB and build as the Palit Jetstream, as they are the same size shorter PCBs with the same outputs too.

I dont really like the look of the Jetstreams, and have always wanted the Phantom cooler aesthetics wise anyway, and its pre overclocked to 1300 Mhz too. As long as it can reach 1400-1450 Mhz like any other 970, it should match 980 stock speeds at a fraction of the cost.

I'd normally have gone for MSI cards, but I wanted the triple DP outputs too. If that doesnt bother you I'd definitely recommend the MSI or Asus Strix ones, but to run triple 4k, or G Sync monitors you need three DP 1.2 outputs on the primary card, which Gainward and Palit have done on lower cost versions of the card.

Oh cool, I just spotted this gigabtye one:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-g...-3x-dp-1x-dvi-

3 normal size DPs, and £275, so I wont need converter cables, that one instead, 15 mins till Scan's phonelines open to get it sorted out.

Re: Gtx 970, which one is it going to be?

Nice. I caused a bit of a PITA for scan support though lol.

Changed my order to the Gigabyte cards, then a while later they read my email and changed them to the Gainwards, then I had to call again to change back to the gigabytes ...

Its all sorted now though, two gigabyte Windforce OCs should be with me on monday. Im not really bothered about paying £50 more for slightly higher clocks on the G1 cards anyway, I currently still run my GTX 680s undervolted to 1150 Mhz instead of the stock 1205 and my CPU at stock speed so they dont dump out too much heat, I only really OC for benchmarks. They should still clock into the 1400s, just not up to around 1500 like the G1 is what I'm thinking.

One problem though, I already listed my GTX 680 lightning editions for sale elsewhere, but then OCUK go and do a huge sale on GTX 700s with 770s for the same price I wanted for mine (£180). So I'll probably have to wait longer until such offers end.

Hopefully I can still sell them for enough so that each 970 only ends up having cost me around £100.
