So scan have their stock of 290's and 290X's, and I must say I'm quite tempted.
I've managed to find an MSI 780 - what do we think it's worth? Seeing as a new 290 is 200, I offered 150 for it.
During the search, I've come across this pretty hilarious review for the Asus 290. http://prntscr.com/70lxe7

Many may say they'll help, but with any individual seller you've bought from, you will only find out how true that is when time comes to claim on it.
Also, warranty claims are one thing, but your (UK at least) legal rights are another, and if it comes to that, if you've bought from a private seller you have almost no legal rights against them, and none whatever against the original seller.
It's your money, and your risk, of course, but if it's over as little as £20 and, "as a student" that £20 is a deal-killer, then personally, I'd suggest that, "as a student" you really can't afford that kind of money on a gaming GPU.
In my days as a student, my worry was having enough money for food and the occasional beer. If students these days are going equipped with an Xbox 360, AND a £200 GPU for their PC, maybe student fees aren't quite high enough, yet.

Appears as though the new 380(x) are going to be re brands. If the last iteration is anything to go by, prices won't drop. I don't remember the prices dropping really.
If someone remembers differently, feel free to correct me - memory hasn't been on top for recently
As a general question, however, which would you go for right now?
New 290X for 227 or a second hand 970 for similar money?

Just the warranty that appeals to me, and the fact I've not been able to find one for a reasonable price...

I'm still for buying new when paying the kinda money your budget is.
I also believe the 290 / X isn't going to go radically cheaper, for a number of reasons.
OCuk flogged HIS branded 285s at £99 this week, had about 14 IIRC and went within hours.
Ebuyer got 285 @ £119 but powercolour ones.

For only a little more than the 290 I can get a new 290x.

You might be able to get a used 970 for around the upper £200 mrk used
I got an Asus Strixx GTX 970 used for £210, plays whatever game I throw at it at 1440p no problem, also runs fine under OS X 10.10!
I've been looking for one, but haven't been able to find one.
