I doubt they knew NVidia were going to release a 980Ti quite so soon after the Titan X release that would be so close to it in performance. If the titan had been double precision or something then it would still make some sense but now I just dont see the point in the Titan at all.

Well most of us did, so presumably someone who was going to part with that much money did as well!

We knew something was going to be released, we didn't know it was going to basically render the T-X moot.

It's not moot. But most of us were expecting a T-X with a few CUs disabled, a higher clock/boost and 6GB RAM, and that's exactly what we got. T-X is for people who need 12GB basically.

Which is a surprise to who? We aren't the market for the titan cards, but someone who has to have the best by the numbers, even if it's only for a few months, is.

Fine... obviously none of them feel stupid that they bought a cards that was essentially re-released for ~$300 less, I shouldn't have made such a ludicrous statement

It wasn't ludicrous, but I would hope (and I think shaithis was making a similar point) that anyone spending that much on a graphics card either knew what they were doing (because it was obvious that it would play out like it did) or is in a position that they don't care one way or the other.

Well first off it's a cheap fp32 compute card with very good price/performance compared to a quadro/firepro. The full 12 GB is useful for CUDA workloads involving rendering video, ray tracing, big data etc.

As far as using that full 12gb for gaming goes - people running multiple Titan Xs in SLI to power e.g. 5k monitors, VR setups etc have found a use for the full framebuffer.

It's also useful for game developers and modders who certainly make use of large framebuffers during development so they don't have to scale down and compress their textures all the time.

Finally, if you have that level of disposable income and want the best performing single gaming GPU on the market it also makes perfect sense.

If that's your entire month's salary it probably doesn't. Again it's entirely a personal value proposition based on your needs and budget.

I havent tested a TI vs Titan-X but I suspect the Titan-X will have the edge in UE4 .

Indeed, there a people who will just want the best. The 980ti isn't the best, so such people will remain happy. People who bought a 980, I wonder what they think of "If you had waited and spent another £100..." because they are more focused on value for money but not completely else they would have bought the 970.

I am just happy to be out of the race, my bargain bucket R9 285 should tide me over until 16nm parts come out with HBM2

Well don't forget the whole 3.5GB memory partition controversy with the 970 vs a true 4GB for the 980. Plus in previous generations aftermarket x70 cards like the MSI Lightning have been able to reach stock x80 performance. You could get an overclocked GTX 670 that reached the performance of a 680 for just over half the price. And back in the days of the GTX 275, aftermarket versions actually had extra memory installed to run Grand Theft Auto 4. From what I understand this is not the case with the 900 series.

So I think the value proposition of a x70 has reduced a lot compared to previous years. In my opinion the 980 model now occupies that historical sweet spot given the announced price reduction.

Also there were semi-serious claims the 980ti could have a 5.5GB partition, have any benchmarks confirmed the memory architecture yet?

Which at the end of the day, is of no practical import, though some (and I tend this way) may object on matters of principal due to the way it was marketed.

I doubt people on Hexus would make such a claim in anything but jest. But the matter is simple - the benchmarks speak for themselves.

Looks like Titan X and the 980TI will have a very short shelf life.
