    Graphics card installion Fury...

OK, I'm building up a new PC... All the kit was installed except the graphics card.

So, it's a UEFI system running Win8.1, off the integrated graphics. 3 installs to get UEFI configured correctly but it's all good. Windows updating nicely blah blah blah.

Graphics card arrive so in it goes. Change UEFI to use PCI-Ex slot 1 for the primary graphics card and boot up the system. Before I get to Windows desktop, Windows reports an "oops - there has been an error" (disappears so quickly that I can't read the full report) and I get dumped into Windows Recovery.

What a PITA that is. first thing is select a keyboard layout, and what do you know, United Kingdom takes about a dozen clicks to get too! But I digress...

Every time I've installed a graphics card in the past, I get dumped to Desktop with crappy resolution until I can get the drivers in. This time I can't even get there.

Removing the graphics card and all is peachy, calm restored!

I did find in the Fast Boot options a setting for a UEFI or legacy gpu driver, but neither setting helped.

So... before I RMA, is there anything I should be doing in the UEFI to install the card?

What card is it? Might be worth checking the manufacturer s site for a uefi bios for it. I had similar issues with a 670

Did you disable the iGPU when install the card? (not that you should have to but it's worth trying)

You can also boot from iGPU and disable the auto-restart on system failure, add the card and then read the BSOD which might be useful.

    What card is it?

Can't see anything on the Sapphire site. Will check out UEFI and AMD. Thanks for the hint

I can't find an option in the UEFI to disable the iGPU, just a menu to select the primary GPU.

    It's a Sapphire R9 FURY X 4G D5 (aka AMD stock build)

Trying to raise this up with the Sapphire and AMD forums.

Whilst creating the trouble ticket on the Sapphire website, the option in the pull down menu for the card *and they only have 1 Fury x) is

    R9 FURY X 4G HBM PCI-E HDMI / TRIPLE DP (UEFI) FULL

So ones presumes that the card supports UEFI.

Installed an old 4850 into the system and it all booted up. Slapped the Fury back in and all is good.

Think I'll put this down to a quirk of UEFI unless someone can explain what just happened!

    Haha relief, how's it running?

Oh yeah! What I never mentioned is that the un-boxing left me with a bad feeling. The condition of the packaging had a rather reused feel to it, if you catch my drift.... but I suspect that this is original stock that Sapphire/AMD have recalled to replace the pump unit.

Will hook it up to my main workspace and install something juicy on it today.

I know what you mean but as long as the card looked unused? Was there some peel-off plastic? Ohh that's always a winner

No peeled off plastic... no plastic to peel off!

The box was a bit knocked about, the cardboard ripped in one of the corners
There were no security seals at all
The anti-static bags and instruction booklet were crumpled
The paper envelope for the driver disk was ripped
The screw threads in the radiator looked used

Nothing I can prove to be honest, it just didn't feel right.

And when it didn't work first time... well, at £550 you expect everything to be perfect!

If it were my card I would report that to Sapphire giving serial number and other details so that can be logged by them with your warranty registration details, that way should the need arise for you to RMA in the future, there will already be a record of the condition of the card and Sapphire won't be able to blame you for tampering with the card and voiding the warranty.

Sounds a bit off to me. Where did you buy it from?
Have you contacted Sapphire? I would do what ajones suggested.

I agree with them, that's out of line and for the price you pay you expect to be 'wowed' from the get go. The manufacturer should either reseal it properly or allow the vendor to sell it as 2nd hand like the warehouse deals for example.
The more one seeks, the more one finds and so you realise there is a lot more to be found.
