    Opinion on AMD graphics please.

I've got a Crossfire enabled motherboard that supports 4 video cards and I want to know if in the AMD Radeon R series has any significant advancement in technology over the AMD HD series, specifically an HD 6870 which is the minimum requirements for a game I have.

Depends on which R series. R9, yes. Otherwise no.

There's nothing special about the R9 branded cards technology wise, the R7 ones use exactly the same design(s) so are similarly advanced, if lower power.

Perhaps the biggest advancement in technology of late (other than generally improved performance per watt) is variable refresh rate support. Specifically Adaptive Sync/Freesync (same thing). That's supported on the 260, 260X, 360, 285, 380 380X, And all _90/Fury/Nano cards.

HD/R branding change doesn't correspond to a technology split though. All of the R branded cards are either exactly the same chips as introduced in the HD 7000 series or improved versions of the same architecture.

True, but in terms of speed, it's not worth downgrading from a 6870 if that's the minimum requirement for a game.
