Upgrade - Geforce GTX 660 OC vs Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC
Hello All,
I would like a little advice on upgrading my graphic card.
I currently have a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 660 OC 2GB.
I was thinking of replace with a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC 4GB (https://www.scan.co.uk/products/giga...-1442mhz-boost)
Current PC specs:
Intel Core i5-3570K
16 GB RAM
Gigabyte Geforce GTX 660 OC 2GB.
2 x 256Gb SSD
Would I find a great difference with this card?
Thanks
Sam
Re: Upgrade - Geforce GTX 660 OC vs Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC
I wouldn't have thought it was a worthwhile difference.
What you need is a 1060 or RX580 to get a real boost, if you can find one for sensible prices. One of those I estimate at about double the performance of your 660.
Re: Upgrade - Geforce GTX 660 OC vs Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC
The GTX1050TI is probably slightly quicker than a GTX960 and my GTX960 was an upgrade over my GTX660.
However,I might be more inclined to wait until the mining craze losses a bit of steam and get an RX470/RX570 instead(or even a GTX1060 3GB).
Also,if you must upgrade now it might be worth looking at one of the £130ish GTX1050TI cards - its not like it needs a massive cooler being bus powered.

Sorry it is a GTX 1050 Ti.
Missed it in my original post.
I have updated it now.
Thanks for replying

Re: Upgrade - Geforce GTX 660 OC vs Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC
You will see a big difference at the resolution and setting you are playing right now, but if you want to play at 1080p on max settings it won't be a big difference in terms of performance. If I were you I'd wait for the mining craze to subside and it already is subsiding, so maybe wait 2-3 weeks more and buy a 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB.
The GTX 960 4GB was on average about 30% faster than the GTX 660, less so from the 660ti, the 1050ti is about 15% faster from the GTX 960 4GB, so overall you are looking at around 50% faster performance, but again if you are playing at say 960p and medium settings now and getting weak frames in newer games, getting the 1050ti won't allow you to max settings or play consistently at 60fps.
For a good 1080p experience at mostly 60fps with max or close to max settings you'd need a GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB.

I have been out of the loop for a while with graphic cards. What was the pricing like for the 1060 before mining crazy?

Basically before the mining craze the best card at £150 to £180 was either the RX470 or RX570 4GB especially since the GTX1060 version under £200 only had 3GB of VRAM.
Re: Upgrade - Geforce GTX 660 OC vs Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC
I have not really been a fan of AMD/ATI. I always found that Linux drivers wasn't that great compared to Nvidia Linux drivers but this was over 10 year ago since I last looked at AMD cards.
I will have to re-look at AMD again.
Is there any performance differences between RX470/RX570 and GTX1060 3GB (I don't think I could stretch to the 6GB version) ?
Thanks
Sam

It depends on the games you want to play, but if you do intend to also run some of the more intensive ones, its well worth getting the 6GB GTX1060 against the 3GB one.
The 3GB version of the GTX1060 is a bit faster than a RX470(not sure about the RX570) but the issue is when you hit the 3GB limit performance is affected and with so many 4GB cards about with similar performance like the GTX970 around,I honestly don't think it is worth unless you are only intending to run RAM light games like some of the Blizzard ones for example.
Re: Upgrade - Geforce GTX 660 OC vs Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC
Are you dual booting Windows or is Linux your only OS?
I find the AMD drivers work for me, but I am basically working under Linux where a reliable open source driver is optimal, and gaming under Windows.
What exactly are you hoping to improve with a new card?
Re: Upgrade - Geforce GTX 660 OC vs Geforce GTX 1050 Ti OC
On dealing with epic offline games, I think a GTX 1060 3GB would be just fine. Making the payment upto 6GB or GTX 1070OC is kinda wasteful for me, it will only give you some extra fps when playing top-top-level games.
Guys, abit off-topic, but do you guys play Battle ground? How's the gaming experience with GTX1050Ti? I was familiar with GTX1060 but I haven't tried a 1050Ti before. I'm building my new case as my old case was moved out.
