DVD drive causes a Blue Screen of Death

Whenever I turn on my PC with the drive connected, I get a BSOD. Interestingly, if I turn on the PC with the drive connected and with a DVD in, it does not BSOD on me. At the moment, I'm getting round this problem simply by disconnecting the drive, but now, of course, I can't play any DVDs without first shutting down and then reconnecting it.

Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or is the drive just a bit broked and needs replacing?

My PC is about a year old and this problem has only existed for a month ort two.

    Thanks for any feedback

sounds like the drives on its way out, try updating the chipset drivers after uninstalling and running the likes of driver sweeper on them

Firstly replace the cable. Is it a SATA drive?
Secondly, replace the DVD drive. You can pick up re-writers for £12 so thankfully they're not a huge expense
    Moo.

Yea, I was thikning of just replacing it because they are cheap as chips.

I'll have a fiddle with chipset drivers and replacing the SATA cable (it is indeed a SATA drive) and see what happens. Otherwise, I'll just control+t over to scan.co.uk

Re: DVD drive causes a Blue Screen of Death

I've got a sata cabled drive that used to do something very similar. In the end I narrowed it down to the sata plug on the drive end not making good contact due to it not being a tight fit. Sorted the problem with some super glue to hold the cable in the right place.

But for less than £20 you can pick up a new one so not really worth the hassle
