I've tried rebooting/resetting the router, restarting the PC and ran the diagnostic tool, but I still can't connect to the internet. My isp is Virgin and router is the Virgin Super Hub.

What did Virgin say when you rang them? Could be a problem at their end.
Open a command prompt (Start > run > cmd )
type "ipconfig"
What's your IP address?
If it start "169", then there is something wrong with the superhub.
If it starts 192 or 10, then there is something wrong with your internet connection.
Hard to troubleshoot any further then that without more info.
Well this is embarrassing, I've run into the same problem again. Turned the PC on this morning only to come up against the -"Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration problem.
I called VM again, and was told there is a problem with my system. I don't know what the problem could be, since this is a new PC build with only the default security applications installed (Windows Firewall/Defender).
My network adapter is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.
What did they do to resolve it last time?
169.254.xxx.xxx addresses are APIPA addresses which basically means that the PC is not receiving its address from the DHCP server (the Superhub in this case) but from Windows itself. Causes for this are many, but first check the cabling very carefully, if there is no issue there, then reboot the PC in safe mode and see if problem persists, some security programs can block access to internet on the incorrect settings.
There is nothing to say that the Superhub is not causing the problem at the moment, but anything connected to it should have a 192.168.0.XXX address.
Do you have another device - desktop or laptop, that you can connect to the same cable?
Are your wireless devices connecting ok?
Is the Superhub in modem mode, and if it is are you connected to the Ethernet port closest to the Coax cable?
The cable is fine. I'm using Windows Defender/Firewall. How do I boot into safe mode on Windows 8?
No.Quote:

Yes. Tablets and mobiles have no problems.Quote:

Its in router mode.Quote:

They rebooted the super hub. I don't want to be doing that every 2 days lol.
After trying multiple fixes and having a VM technician try and fix the problem remotely, I've fixed the problem by simply turning on my Sky box! It seems that the Sky box has to be on (I turn it off at the switch every night) before the other devices on port 2/3 can get internet access lol. I've switched the PC ethernet cable to port 1 and everything is now working perfectly. :o
@xpronic
Hi bro,I am suffering from the same situation :(

Replace your network interface card and be done with it!!! I've spent over a year dealing with this problem on my Dell Studio XPS. I've followed all sorts of suggestions from lots of threads on how to solve the problem. I even changed from Windows Vista 64 bit to Windows 8 (which I'm glad now that I did just for the difference in start up time!). Whatever I tried would seem to give a temporary solution for a week or for a few days and then the problem would happen all over again. In the end a friend said, replace the Network Interface Card, so I did -- it cost me about $15. Voila! That's all it took! Problem Solved!!!
The onboard nic can not be changed in most laptops, the wireless card/adapter on the other hand can be.
I would look for a intel based wireless card / adapter i seem to have few issues with them.
