    mobo struggles to pick up hdd

    the board is a msi 1155 with 2x 6gb sata ports and the issue is this, plug in any normal size hdd 3.5" and the hdd will sound like its heads are clicking and the pc will then just not pick it up, plug it into ports 2 and 3 then it works but windows wont install as it will fail however....plug in a 2.5" hdd into port 1 or 2 and it works HOWEVER windows cannot install onto it as it seems to think the hdd will fail soon o.O

    Please help

    Can you boot to a CD on these SATA ports? You mention Ports 1, 2, 3; is that the total number of Ports? Is BIOS up to date? Have you reset the CMOS?

    Re: mobo struggles to pick up hdd

    What error message did you receive when you try to install windows?

    You have tried a 3.5" and 2.5" hard drive but both failed to install Windows. I could be wrong but sounds like the BIOS setting in motherboard could be set incorrectly which can stop Windows from installing. Does the two hard drive work fine with other computers?

    Re: mobo struggles to pick up hdd

    Im unsure but it seems that any drive i put in it fails to work....however i have managed to get it installed now...a pin inside of the sata port had been bent somehow o.O was pushed over next to another and i can only guess that this was causing it but now...all 4 hdd's i tested in it are not working correctly at all im currently doing a test with hd tune which has already found bad sectors on the drives...anyone have any suggestions on the best way to repair them? i know windows has something (forgotten what it is called) but i guess there is a better program out there that can do a much better job? im not to worried about the small hdd's but my spinpoint f3 500gb...well id like to get that one sorted!

    Also just want to clear up i haven't bent the pin back..ive used sata port two for the hdd that is currently installed in said system. i dont know if im able to repair the bent pin as its a tight gap! has anyone had this issue before? if so how have you repaired it?

    never underestimate the possibility of having duff cables. I have driven myself up the wall before finding i was using dodgy sata cables. Even if you think you might have found a problem, give you cables a good check!

    Re: mobo struggles to pick up hdd

    Within windows use chkdsk /r to repair and recover however best to do it when you are not using it as it will take a while depending amount of data you have. You cannot repair sectors hard drive but Windows can attempt to recover/retrieve information and marks it as bad so Windows do not write files into that sector.

    If you have many bad sector which will indicate your hard drive is starting to fail but will continue to work. I highly suggest you start backing up your data before it fail.

    Re: mobo struggles to pick up hdd

    Yes bad sectors means copy anything off those drives ASAP. And in the meantime don't power up the drives and certainly don't running recovery software on them. If they contain valuable data, back that up to another drive (external, internal etc), and if need be priorities that data.

    That is, copy the most important / irreplaceable stuff (documents and photos, i.e. things you cannot replace) off before copying more trivial stuff like videos or music. When a HDD starts to develop bad sectors it could go any time (although it might still last years too!) and you really want to the time you have to get the most important stuff first. No point in first copying some huge video file and when you get around to your photos etc. finding that the drive has died.

    If you don't have anywhere to store the stuff, don't even power up those drives until you've bought a new drive.

    As to why you have more than one drive with bad sectors:
    • maybe your PSU is bad and has damaged all the drives;
    • maybe the drives are old and you only just now noticed that they have all recently failed;
    • maybe the PC was recently dropped or moved while the drives were spinning;
    • maybe the damaged SATA port is shorting and has either damaged something on the mobo (and hence the drives look like they are failing some CRC check etc.). Not even sure if that is possible but I mentioned it anyhow.
    • maybe the damaged SATA port managed to damage the drive or the drive's controller. Shorts aren't good for electronics after all.

    But whatever, treat those drives as if they are about to fail and safe your data first.

    Re: mobo struggles to pick up hdd

    I've repaired bent pins in the past, but not in a SATA port. Generally I've used a mini screwdriver to get it at least part way back and then something like tweezers or small snake-nose pliers to finish the job. You would really need to take the motherboard out of the case to give you maximum visibility and working room. I probably wouldn't bother here, as you don't sound like you need the Port, and it appears to boot OK on Port 2.

    What I gather has happened so far is that you have tried several drives in SATA Port 1 with the bent pin. This appears to have had a bad effect on said drives as they now no longer work on other Ports. As only one is an important disk I suggest you copy it as kompukare says. The question is then whether you have merely caused bad sectors by trying to boot on the dodgy SATA Port or whether you have permanently damaged the hardware. Chkdsk should repair the former, but you still may find yourself needing to re-install Windows, or even re-formatting the HDD. If the latter then nothing can be done. Regardless kompucare's advice is good. Recently I had a HDD start to fail, and there was a gap in my backup as I'd had to re-install Windows shortly before. Luckily I copied the important files straight away, because the next day the system wouldn't even boot with said HDD attached.

    Righty o thanks for all the advice guys! checked sata cables and replaced to see if these were at fault...nope i also had check disk running over night.....396 bad sectors although it says it repaired it! i now am unsure how much i can trust my spinpoint f3 drive even if i install it back to the pc it still spins then clicks, spins then clicks, i also took the mobo down to a local shop who sorted out the faulty sata port for free! bonus it took him a matter of minutes and now the ports seem to be working again.

    In regards to my spinpoint, it works in all other ports minus the first to which is rather odd but naturally as i expected it wont allow me to install windows if i plug it into ports 3-6 so what ever has happened my hdd is defiantly not good, but for peace of mind should i replace the mobo? it works now so im hesitant to...

    Don't trust it now, Windows would claimed it have been "repaired" but it just marking the sector unusable so it wouldn't write data to it like placing duct tape over holes on vinyl flooring. And clicking noise... if your Samsung Spinpoint F3 contains important data, like kompukare said back it up.

    I had a hard drive clicking for two days and dead the next day but luckily I have backed up all my data.

    Re: mobo struggles to pick up hdd

    All data has been recovered none of it was an issue as the drive was working before being plugged into this pc o.O was freshly formatted ready to be used in the new rig!

    This is the odd thing the hdd only clicks when plugged into sata port 1 or 2 on this new msi board o.O plug it into the others and yes slow to recognize in the bios (takes an extra like 10 seconds for the screen to switch on) it works....and in my external case when plugged into my laptop works perfectly fine and copys data to and from it...its a tough one....

    Re: mobo struggles to pick up hdd

    Guess you could use that Spinpoint for game installs, or movies you have on discs etc. Anyway, chkdsk is pretty useless for this. Go and try gsmartcontrol instead of one of the other SMART tools:
    gsmartcontrol.berlios.de/
    there's actually a Windows port but the better alternative is running from a bootable Linux. PartedMagic is good for that:
    partedmagic.com/
    However, a HDD which clicks cannot be trusted at all. So it's probably only good for the dumb

    Well, speak of the devil it has just given up the ghost, windows now wont recognize it in my external drive anymore either! just plugged it back in to run hd tune and windows wants to format the drive....however it has just been sat attempting to format and failing oh well i guess i could turn it into a fancy looking HDD clock!

    or take out the magnets - they're very strong indeed as in if stuck to some iron your nails would break trying to prise the magnet off unless you can slide it.
