UEFI, Windows 8 and secure boot
A colleague of mine was going to go through some standard hardware checks (Eurosoft PC Check) on a customer's laptop today (Sony Vaio). Before going through any of the pc check side of things, he disabled secure boot in windows. However, the cd would not boot as it was blocked by the UEFI. Now it won't boot from the HDD and he can't get into the "BIOS" screen. The only thing we can get to boot is an Ubuntu live CD. From the bit of reading I've done, Microsoft use a Microsoft Private Key to prevent you from installing a new/different OS (even though they deny it's for that purpose). Is there anything we can do to get past this secure boot stuff to reinstall windows on the laptop?
Thanks in advance for any help, and I apologise if this didn't make complete sense!
Re: UEFI, Windows 8 and secure boot
You are correct. From what I read about Secureboot + UEFI and Windows 8, Secureboot protect computer users from malicious code by insuring only trusted software can boot on the machine therefore only Windows 8 can boot. As you insert the CD, it trigger Windows 8 to not boot as consequences but you should be able to access BIOS or other boots options before it loads.
I have couple of Dell laptops at my work that has Secureboot + UEFI which I have disable them to install clean Windows 8 from bootable USB drive.
