    USB Ports only working intermittently

    Hi everyone

I cannot seem to get all my USB ports running at the same time. If one works, the other doesn't, in varying orders and degrees of randomness. Is this some sort of software or bios conflict? I cannot seem to work out what is going on.

    Any help much appreciated!

    Thanks

What motherboard is it? Is this a recent problem, if so, what did you change immediately before the problem arose? What operating system are you using? What USB devices are you using?

    Hi Peter

The build is about a year old, it has always had the problem - only now have I finally decided to do something about it! The USB devices are a combination of an external hard disk, a 3.0 extension cable leading to a kingston card reader and wireless keyboard. It is the wireless keyboard that seems to drop out.

The build is Windows 7, and the motherboard is Asus P8H67-I Deluxe.

    Thanks so much

Re: USB Ports only working intermittently

First thought would be a connection issue, particularly if you sre using the mobo headers.

Otherwise a driver issue, although windows 7 supports USB very well.

Re: USB Ports only working intermittently

    Hi Peter

Thanks for your thoughts. I think it must be a software issue and something happened this morning that illustrates this well.

I was using two USB 3.0 ports and attached to each were separate hard disks. I was copying files simultaneously from my computer onto both. However, one of them kept dropping out. Looking at my computer it remained connected but it obviously couldn't keep up the data transfer. It did this every time I tried it.

Once the other disk had finished I recommenced the failed copy and it progressed and finished without an issue. That seems a bit weird doesnt it? I attach a screenshot of my device manager, but I am not sure how to deal with it, it seems to show there is some sort of conflict/issue

Re: USB Ports only working intermittently

    @Peter, I wouldn't say W7 supports USB 3.0 too well, wasn't it Windows 8 that formalised it?

zenpmd, have you tried updating your BIOS and drivers? http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Inte...LUXE/#download

Re: USB Ports only working intermittently

If your usb chipset is NEC/renesas you can update the firmware. Make sure you check which chip it is and after the update you may need to do a bios reset for it to work.
I believe a website called station drivers has the firmware.
