Hopefully the cpu did a good job with throttling and saved itself. Just learn your lesson and be careful next time
Can't believe it took this long for someone to point this out.

It is not recommended to use IBT with 3 and 4 series i chips, especially not with the stock cooler!

Re: Stock i5 4670k with intel stock heatsink fan reaches 100 celcius in IBT

I need some help, 3 weeks ago I bought an i5 4670k WITH an hyper 212 evo cpu cooler, but I noticed that my CPU temp is reaching the 80c in games like GTA4, It shouldnt, and I dont know where I did wrong....It's not a steady temp, the room temp is around 25C but I have an NZXT phantom 530 case, and the clocking is stock, I dont want to overclock it but intel's website says it should only REACH 65C, its my steady temp in GTA4, but it reaches around 82-83(even 85) for fractions of seconds..... and if I render something with 3DS Max, it does the same thing, It reaches around 80C, but it goes back down very fast to around 40 and the idle temp is around 35, witch is higher than what intel says. I did removed the plastic thing, I applied properly the thermal paste(I think) and its well screwed, but I still can move it a bit(turning it about 10degrees)

    My specs:
    i5 4670k stock clocking
    Gigabyte g1 sniper z5s
    8gb kingston hyperX h2o(2x4gb)
    sapphire radeon HD 6770 1gb gddr5
    1tb western digital black
    EVGA supernove NEX750G 80+Gold
all this inside NZXT Phantom 530 with Fans added

Re: Stock i5 4670k with intel stock heatsink fan reaches 100 celcius in IBT

If you can still twist the cooler when it's fully screwed in then I think something's not quite right - could be too much thermal goop. How much did you apply and how did you apply it?

Have you set the BIOS to optimal defaults?

Otherwise see what the fan controller on your cooler is doing - it could be that it's not ramping up fast enough (ie the motherboard is supplying voltages for a stock fan rather than your aftermarket one), so you might want to use speedfan or other software to create your own fan speed profile. If you use speedfan make sure to uninstall any of gigabytes own software.

Re: Stock i5 4670k with intel stock heatsink fan reaches 100 celcius in IBT

I did fully screwed it but at a point, the spacer was turning on itself, but i cant place it properly, or else ill destroy the spacer's thread, and i only applied a rice grain size of heatpaste, that i spreaded(and removed a bit) with a credit card

I have loaded optimize default on my motherboard, except for one thing, i have 2 other HDD(both WD black 250gb) in raid 0, but I dont think its the problem

I also added a second fan for a push-pull configuration, but its not plugged at the same place, its on my case's fan controller, but, that said, at highest speed, I get 2C lower when idle.... the thing is, the peaks are still there, they last less than a half of a second, then the fan speed goes up and it comes down at the normal temp with a STOCK cooler......(around 65C) but it peaks back as soon it gets at around 55C because my fan speed slows down....

could it be because my fan controller isnt properly tuned?
or am I having a defective piece somewhere? or is it my sensor that is wrong?
(I think that my idle temp is alru=ight because my room temp is 25 and all the benchmarks are 20, and im only 5 higher, its the peak that scares me(but they dont last)
