Stock i5 4670k with intel stock heatsink fan reaches 100 celcius in IBT

So I just built my new pc in a nzxt 410 case my mobo is gigabyte z87x-d3h.
I Intel burn test to check stability but temperatures hit 100 degrees celcius! Have I damaged my cpu now? Surely even with the stock cooler temperatures shouldn't rise this high?
I'm contemplating getting a h100i now, but would anyone be able to advise me on what could have caused this?
I have no previous experience with building a pc but I think I installed the heatsink properly. However I do remember placing the heatsink down on the cpu and the taking it back off to rotate it before placing it back on. Could this be the cause?

Also, could anyone recommend a brand of thermal paste that I should buy and what I should use to clean the existing paste off?

No you won't have damaged it, it will throttle before damaging itself.

But also, no, it shouldn't go anywhere near that high on the stock cooler.

Rotating it shouldn't be such an issue, unless it came off badly when you took it off. You did check that there wasn't any plastic film to remove first right? Did you plug in the fan power cable?

Use nail varnish remover (acetone/isopropyl alchohol) to clean off old paste. Any brand or even generic thermal paste/grease is fine.

I didn't check for plastic D: Please tell me there isn't normally a layer of plastic on top?? Eeek what do I do?? It must have melted in that case...

Depends on the CPU - I think the last one I tried had a film to remove, but that was a while ago. It probably wouldn't have melted, but either way clean off the goop and try again.

It also might be one of the intel dodgy cooler twist connectors being loose. I had same issue once with i7. Take the cooler off and simply refit it. Make sure that the cooler is attached very solid, and secure all 4 connectors by twisting them.

it won't melt anyway, the temps are way too low

Re: Stock i5 4670k with intel stock heatsink fan reaches 100 celcius in IBT

Its fine. My Intel i5 750 has been running at just under 100 for 3 years using the stock cooler. Wouldn't even notice that the temperatures were that high since the stock cooler seems to prioritize noise over cooling. Cooler only sounds slightly louder at load than idle.

now there's a difference between 750 and 4670, it **will** work upto 100 degrees Celcius but you shouldn't really do that

True, I was just pointing out that a CPU reaching 100 degrees wont cause any perma damage as the OP seems to be beyond worried lol

He should check the seating of the cpu cooler as this seems the most likely cause. If that is not the problem then he could manual change the fan speed.

Wow! I would never dream of running a CPU near 100c!! The hottest CPU i've ever owned was the old i7 940 which used to hit around 80c under load (overclocked)... I even thought that was a bit on the high side .

thanks for all the replies! I don't feel comfortable with it at that temperature... I will check the cpu and reinstall cooler maybe by h100i or something as well. Do I need to take mobo out when I change the cooler? There is a hole on the other side of my case which gives access to the back of the board?

Re: Stock i5 4670k with intel stock heatsink fan reaches 100 celcius in IBT

For removing the stock cooler you shouldn't need to take your MoBo out.
You just twist the four securing plugs clockwise (if I recall correctly) and gently wriggle the cooler off.
Clean both contact surfaces afterwards (even alcohol wipes should do), meaning carefully the bottom of the cooler and the top of CPU.
Re-apply a pea size amount of thermal compound and re-attach the cooler. Make sure the securing pins of the cooler are faced as per arrows on top of the pins (counterclockwise to the maximum if I recall correctly). If unsure, just search for a YouTube video how to do it.
    Good luck.
100C while not overclocking? That can't be right. Is there any case cooling present?

My case is the nzxt phantom 410 which cones with 3 fans. I've replaced the stock cooler with a hyper 212 evo and running intel burn test the maximum temperature I got up to was 66 degrees Celsius not having over clocked the CPU at all yet. Big improvement from before, is that considered normal or still a bit high?

I would personally say that 66 degrees and some below 70 should be the maximum.

I'd still say that's a bit high for an i5 CPU running stock using a CM Hyper 212 EVO! What thermal paste are you using? My i5 3570k hits a maximum of 60C and that's with a cheap Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 and Arctic MX-4 thermal paste.

Are the Haswell chips really that bad when it comes to keeping them cool? And i thought my Ivy i5 3570k temps were poor compared to my old Sandy i5 2500!

IBT is insane for pushing cpu's and causing high temps. I prefer Prime95 myself. But if IBT really is a must use program for you, then don't ever run it with a stock cooler on again lol... Maybe do a P95 trial for an hour or something to see what temps you get. Then think about whether going for IBT is a good idea 100c is not ideal. Hopefully the cpu did a good job with throttling and saved itself. Just learn your lesson and be careful next time
