Two possibilities - the thread is stripped in the insert - a pair of tweezers might help extract it - apply un upward force while turning it - tricky but possible.

The other possibility is that the inset is pressed or screwed into the back plate. You need to removed the backplate to investigate. if it is pressed or riveted in place, you need to apply pressure to stop it. If it is screwed in and the crew is loose, you just ned to keep turning until the motherboard comes free. You can then grip the body of the inset and remove it from the motherboard.

Re: 1 screw away from taking Motherboard out

Could it be that the screw was too tightened during installation and now when he tried to undo it, instead of unscrewing the screw from the metal hex nut, he just unscrewed the metal hex nut (with the screw still fixed in) from the motherboard plate. If that is correct, all he have to do now is to take the motherboard out, cause theoretically nothing should be holding the motherboard in any more (beside the I/O shield). Once the motherboard is removed, he can undo the screw-metal hex nut pair.

Had the same thought, might just be that the screw is threaded in to the standoff weirdly, keep turning and you might just be able to unscrew the standoff from the motherboard tray.

Chances are if you access the back of the mobo tray and hold the standoff with some pliers, then unscrew all will be fine. You can find out what caused it once it's out.

The mounts have always been a pretty shoddy design IMO.
