    No Driver for Ethernet Connector

    Hi all

Sorry to post another help request - my new rig is up and running (pending RMA return of the PSU tomorrow) but there is a problem with internet access. Put simply, having tried both Win 10 and Ubuntu the ethernet controller is not working. Further investigation in windows shows that it does not have a device driver added. I have downloaded and tried installing the most up to date intel drivers for the mobo but encounter a 'there is no device' type of error.

So, does anyone have any advice as to whether this sounds like a dodgy ethernet chip on the mobo (Asus Maximus VII Ranger) or I'm simply missing somethkng that I should be doing?

Many thanks and all the best

    RR

Re: No Driver for Ethernet Connector

It could be an issue with the controller not being supported in Win 10.

Also check BIOS settings to make sure the Ethernet controller hasn't been disabled.

Re: No Driver for Ethernet Connector

The danger of strange LAN chips!

Most likely the Linux kernel does not support the Intel I218V chip (never heard of it either). So that explains Ubuntu.

As for Windows, it is surely not the motherboard drivers you need but the LAN ones? Anyway, most likely the setup program will not work when it finds Win10 (compatibility might fool it though), but you should be able to manually install them in Device Manager (update drivers>browse and then select the drivers: you might have to unzip the drivers or keep the setup running and look in temp).

Re: No Driver for Ethernet Connector

Thanks Watercooled and kompukare - the Ubuntu aspect seems striaghtforwards. The win issue seems a little more strange and, I think, most likely win 10 related as the system can see that the ethernet controller is there and it has no driver - but when I run driver install utilities from both Intel and Asus they aborted as they said they did not detect the right hardware. I have also used a little driver check and install utility called 3DP Net which can see there are two Intel I218V chips but when the driver update process is run it ends with "not needed, no device for update present" for each of them.

    Damned strange!!

Re: No Driver for Ethernet Connector

Try SlimDrivers! Or try to download the Win 8.1 version of your drivers (make sure to match your current OS,as of 32bit or 64bit).
Then right click and if Windows 10 still has the compatibility tab, click to make the installation file compatible for the Windows 8.1. And try it. Hope it was not too confusing and will help.

Re: No Driver for Ethernet Connector

Thanks BB777, I'll try that when I get my PSU back which has just been RMA'ed back to Scan. Will post more when back up and running.

It does, pretty much Intel's entire gigabit PCIe ethernet NIC range is handled by the e1000e kernel module. But the PCIID for his particular motherboard probably hasn't been added to the driver's compatibility list yet.

All I can suggest on that front is perhaps adding a current kernel PPA to ubuntu 14.04.1, or maybe the Ubuntu 14.10 beta2 might be easier, although it's a minor version (3.16) behind the current mainline kernel (3.17.1) release.

As for Windows 10, it's very much a work in progress, my motherboard's HDA audio chip wouldn't work with it. If his NIC works with the current Linux kernel, or Windows 7 or 8, then it's probably ok.

Thanks - but that's a bit over my head at the moment!

As a slight update, and echoing BB777 above, I saw on a MS Win 10 forum that where it doesn't support hardware then you get around that by installing drivers but right clicking to run them in Win 8.1 compatibility mode.

Re: No Driver for Ethernet Connector

Update - new PSU arrived so I connected all and booted up okay. Then I went to load the driver and found it had already sorted it out - wierd but good result!

In which system? Linux or Windows?
