Computer black screen every now and again

So, I've been away for over a month, my computer has been in a box for that period. I've come back, and now, when I play games, or I'm just on the desktop, the screen will go black. It never used to happen, and nothing has changed, other than the fact it's now connected to a TV through HDMI (however, it's disabled and only used when watching films).

    Any ideas?

Re: Computer black screen every now and again

Do the usual check; power and hdmi cables are securely attached. It may be worth reinstalling gpu drivers and sometimes just reseating the gpu is a weird magical fix. It could also just be a dodgy hdmi cable.

Re: Computer black screen every now and again

I've used this HDMI cable before, and I've already done the checks for making sure cables are in the sockets properly

I'll try re installing drivers, but it'll take ages. Internet is now ~3mbps (as in megabit).

Re: Computer black screen every now and again

I'd test it with another HDMI cable or whatever cable you're using to connect your monitor. I went through a period of buying those very cheap HDMI cables and they never lasted very long. Even though you've used the cable before it won't work forever. And try unplugging from the TV to see if it's just not playing nice with your computer since that's the only thing you've changed since last time.

In your system thing, I see you don't have a dedicated GPU, so are you just using the integrated graphics of the i5 4670K? If so, just double check that your display drivers are all updated.

    Shouldn't do.
Mine is 0.7Mbps and it's still pretty quick. Takes 2-3 minutes, perhaps?

I've been getting the occasional drop-out to black as well, though it only lasts a couple of seconds. That's only since going watercooled, so I suspect it's the GPU seating. Need to fiddle with it...

Re: Computer black screen every now and again

I've re installed the drivers, and it's still doing it

Forgot to add, I have a GTX 970, so no on board graphics. I think I may have an overclock. When I've got more time, I'm going to go into the BIOS and check that the settings have stuck, because it wouldn't be the first time that they haven't...

Does the problem still occur when you don't plug in the TV? If so, Might be a driver problem.

Re: Computer black screen every now and again

What's your full pc set up?

Does the pc recover from the black screen?

I would try switching out the cables from the PSU to GPU, switching out your GPU cable, run off integrated graphics without your gpu to see if it stays stable. If it doesn't look at trying a new PSU, if it does try reinstalling your GPU drivers and if that fails RMA your GPU.

Re: Computer black screen every now and again

The last few days I've been checking for errors etc, and it looks as though it was a problem with my overclock, though I ran a stress test for 24 hours straight (4.4GHz @ 1.2V before) and it was fine, no errors. Seems it decided it didn't like it anymore, so I'm now at 4.3 @ 1.21V - does that seem too high for a 4670K on a H80i?

By the way this used to happen on my parents pc for a while, i thought it was everything like graphics card, then motherboard then psu. i replaced it all but the problems slowly came back. turns out in the end it was a faulty monitor....

Re: Computer black screen every now and again

Mine has been doing this ever since I switched to watercooling.
Turns out it's the HDMI cable... or the HDMI socket on the monitor, at least. Nothing to do with the PC (thankfully).

The cable seats perfectly fine into the socket, but still has a bit of 'wiggle' room. Every now and then it karks itself for a couple of seconds... Not massively bad, but bad enough and long enough that I can easily and suddenly die in Elite!!
