if you're worried about the HDD run SMART from a CD and see what it uncovers.

If it's a seagate drive SeaTools DOS also works well, and has even fixed problem discs for me in the past.

Thanks not 100% sure how to do this I could run chkdsk from command prompt. Or is there some other free disk checking tool I can boot into? It's not a Seagate drive it came out of a Fujitsu laptop so I'm guessing it's a Fujitsu drive.

    Re: Dodgy hard drive?

doubt it's a fujitsu drive, don't think they make HDD*. Is it plugged into a machine? What shows up under device manager? Or better still disk management? You can usually get the details out of that as to what drive it is (at least the serial number for plugging into google).

Chkdsk is something else. SMART is a standard error checking/health checking system used on harddrives. See here: https://www.howtogeek.com/134735/how...rive-is-dying/

SMART tools are provided by most HDD manufacturers on their own software. I would tend to go for one of those over crystal disk if you can work out which manufacturer made your drive. But crystal disk is there if you can't find out.

*edit - they sold their HDD business to Toshiba in 2009. So if it's an old machine it could be a fujitsu drive I guess.

    Re: Dodgy hard drive?

Finally managed to get round to looking at this again. The smart test confirmed that the hard drive had died. It was actually an old Maxtor one and not the one from the laptop which I thought was in there. Back up and running with another drive now.

    Thanks for all your help.
