XP doesnt boot after quad core install

Hello everybody, I just put in a Quad core q8200 on a dual booting PC, and windows 7 boots ok, but windows XP reboots everytime before getting to the splash screen. i reset the BIOS ok, i have read that you may have to reinstall XP after putting in a quad processor? is it true? isnt there an alternative?

Odd. I would have thought it would be fine. I presume you had a dual core in before? If so, I would have thought you were already running XP on the Multiprocessor HAL.....in which case a quad should have been a simple case of drop in and let windows detect.

Did you change anything else at the same time?

How much RAM is in the PC and how much is Windows 7 reporting?

Can you get into safe mode?

If so try this fix (found here)

turn off the driver signing. (my computer, properties, hardware, driver
    signing and set to ignore…)

then run this command line exactly:

    rundll32 syssetup,SetupInfObjectInstallAction ACPIAPIC_MP_HAL 128 %windir%\inf\hal.inf

    it took two reboots

Re: XP doesnt boot after quad core install

Oh fantastic! thanks for the suggestions.

i only changed the processor and restarted the PC, and XP doesnt want to go into safe mode either! it reboots fast also so i couldnt see which line it stalls on.

I guess i would have to reinstall the old processor to change some settings, else reinstall XP. oh fun xp.

The ram is the same, 4gb, it shows ok in win 7. the upside is that after resetting the bios defaults but with the easytune program the q8200 oc's nicely!

What are you using XP for, out of interest?

Hopefully, nothing but nostalgia! (although I guess XP Mode would provide that anyway)

Re: XP doesnt boot after quad core install

good question! xp mode because i had some apps that only updated to win7 recently and i didnt get used to it, plus i had to install my EMU audio drivers from vista, the mere thought of which turned me into gollum, it seemed like XP was more reliable, although win7 could be just as fast for me also now! ok i will wecome myself to the future now and embrace the dawn of the new era of win7. Thanks!
