Access 2.5" HD in raid 0

    Hey,
I've got a laptop which I used to use for most things, but then the motherboard failed and I'm back to using my desktop for the time being. I had two 80gb 2.5" HD's on the laptop which were set up in raid 0. I could really do with getting to the data on that HD. My desktop just has a single 200gb HD. Any idea's how I can get to the data and what kind of equipment I would need to do it?
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

You need to find out what chip was doing the RAID on your dead motherboard. Then try and locate a card (PCI for a desktop system ) with the same one, plug them in and hope it see's the array.
There is no sure-fire way of doing it in a situation like this im afraid

Thanks for the fast response. How do I find out which chip does the raid? Will I also need to get 2 x 44pin 2.5inch HD to 40pin converters?

    Yup, you'll need 2 * IDE converters.
You should be able to find out the chip from the manual, looking at the board, in device manager (obviously not an option), or your best bet is the manufactures.

What laptop was it, and ill try to find out for you

Can I just ask what happened to the motherboard? That was one of the things that put me off going for RAID in a laptop - but the speed increase is meant to be worthwhile...

Looks like the PDC20378 chip is an OEM solution - cant find any end user cards with it on. Suspect it’s only designed to sit on the Southbridge and offer RAID from one of those channels.

If you Google "PDC20378" you will find plenty of boards which use it. If you could get hold of one of these, you might be able to get the data back. This assumes that the board will see the array.

If not, you could try one of the promise cards and hope that you’re in luck. The chances are much less that it will work, but it depends how important your data is

Thanks agent for all your help.
Dave87, I'm not really sure why it broke, but I noticed a plastic burning smell coming from it one day, I shut down and restarted the next day hopin it would be ok, then all of a sudden it turned off. I opened it up and a chip had melted. Bit of a pain but it happens. And it was pretty quick at loading things up, a small increase over my desktop of similar spec, but when sumfin goes wrong if u didnt back up ur stuff its not too good lol.

Are you getting the laptop replaced / repaired ?
If so, you could just swap the HD's from the system, and it should just see the array.

I was going to get it repaired, a new motherboard is needed and i was told it would be about £500!!! so I may be claiming on insurance, but then I would replace it with a different system. From now on I'm gonna back up my important stuff

What would happen if I tried to connect the hard drives to another raid controller card other than a promise one?

It more than likely wouldn't see the array, and at worst, would wipe over it

If the data is valuable then I'm sure there are professionals that will recover the data for you, but at a price.

Its bad enough going from a different promise card to another one, going to a different brand is a no-no
Like Dave said, it just wont work. All these cards use their own system to store data. Atleast going with the same brand, you stand a better chance of it working
