Wireless access point probs - recommendations

Hello to you,

I've moved my router from next to my main PC, so it's no longer on LAN, I thought connecting it would be simple as I've got a WGE101 access point that I used to use with my lappy. But I couldn't get it to work - it kept on saying there was a conflict with the IP address.

I checked netgear support for a solution but couldn't find one - but I did find out it won't be Vista compatable (which I intend to switch to)... so here's the issue:

Can someone either help with the above, or suggest a good powerful bridge for my DG834 router (that will be Vista compatible)? Many thanks,

I set up the access point's IP to be automatic, I thought the PC's one was already (even think I checked this)... it was late though, and I was losing the will. Will check again.

yeah it was set to automatic - it spends ages trying to acquire a network address - but that fails. Netgear's "smart navigator" says that the access point is connected to the correct network.

Anyone got any ideas?!

Right I haven't been able to spend much time sorting this out but here's some info for anyone that thinks they can help (*fingers crossed*)

Everything on my network has an IP of:

198.162.0.***

If I allow the access point to automatically select it's IP it selects as above, with the correct subnet mask. HOWEVER, the PC connected to it keeps selects 169.***.*.***, with an 'incorrect' subnet mask. At this point I get an error from the Bridge, asking me to align the IP with the PC's - which if I do it obviously goes on to 169....

The bridge is connected to my router with a high signal strength, and the default gateway is correct, but using the PC I can't see anything on the network, or access the net. PLEASE HELP!!

Apologies if this doesn't make a great deal of sense - I'm a noob at all this. But ask me any questions to clarify.

169.x.x.x is the Windows 'help I can't find an IP' range - so you'll probably find you need to set your PC to something on the 192.168.0.x range, and have the bridge clone it's MAC address - should be an option in the web interface of the bridge.

Personally if I were you, I'd just get a PCI wired card for your laptop. I have one of these:

to talk to my wireless base station, and it works like a treat. I have only installed the driver though, not all the other netgear rubbish.

Your router's a DG834G, right? That's to say a wireless equipped version of the DG834. Do you have the WGE101 in infrastructure mode?

Firstly, I'd set the IP address of the WGE101 manually, to a unique address outside of the DHCP scope of your DG834G router. Leave the PC as automatically assigned. Restart the PC (or do an ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew from a command prompt). See if your PC picks up an IP address then. The 169.<whatever> address is an APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) address, which basically means "OK, I'm plugged in, but I can't see anyone handing out IP addresses, so I'll make one up". Your router should have an internal IP address which looks something like:
Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Your gateway should have it's address set something like:
Address: 192.168.0.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

However, the docs for the DG834G indicate that the start of the default DHCP scope is .2 and goes all the way through to .254. If that's correct, it's dumb. Limit the DHCP scope to say .100 to .199. You are NEVER going to have more than a hundred devices hooked up to it, and that leaves you with everything from .2 through to .99 (and .200 to .254) available for static assignments (like for your bridge).

See whether your PC picks up an address in the correct range after that, and can ping your router. If so, great. If not, try setting its address manually (choose an address from the non-DHCP range as above that's different your gateway) and seeing if you can ping your router then.

Cheers guys - will try these.. If I get fed up with trying to make this work I may just admit defeat and install the "K-Corp" 54Mbps pci card i've got lying around.

Ah.. but of course! there are no x64 drivers for that flippin' KCorp PCI card!!

sod it - I'm gonna just buy one, I can't waste any more time on this . I'll start a new thread in Networking asking for recommendations.

I have the same router as you and recently had exactly the same problem with a netgear wg602 wireless access point and spent hours trying to resolve it. I checked the netgear forums and I understand that you need two access points (one connected to your router even though it is wireless) for it to work. Their forums give further details. I hope this helps
